Talking to Mimi and Papa from the computer

Today was spent editing a thesis for a friend. Slightly painful only because it was literally about paint analysis and watching and waiting for paint to dry. The upside is she gave me some pretty pictures in her thesis to look at! :)

Algorithmic Expression in Computer Science class today! Students had to follow their friends' algorithm exactly to make a paper plane... lift, drag, thrust and gravity.

A coworker unearthed an SWTPC 6800, a computer that came out in 1975.

Myself, checking on the progress of the students.

I don't know what the originally keypad came out of. Although it looks as if it came from some sort of calculator I don't remember having one that used metal "dome" switches. While the issue 5 MK14 board used the same type of keyswitch this is significantly more tactile, and therefore useable, than the onboard version. As this is 3 keys short it is not perfect but was only ever intended for use until I found a more suitable alternative.

These computers stay on all day long for students to use. They are constantly using energy. Some days you are unable to find an opened/available computer, but then others there are at least 20 in one area being unoccupied.

The Minuteman I Guidance Computer was an on-board computer that controlled missile guidance. This system differed from previous missile guidance computers that were operated on the ground and controlled the missile by radio.

The miniaturization of computer components that allowed the guidance computer to be housed on the missile itself was an early example of a trend that would ultimately result in the personal computer being made available to the consumer market. This marks another advance in computer history made in the execution of government programs.

I cobbled together a shelf from available scrap and supplies that were around the house. The shelf is invisible from above and the computer sits nicely on it.

The shelf was made from ¼" mahogany scrap plywood that was glued together with "Gorilla" glue, then was glued to the bottom of the desk with that same type of glue.

This is a picture of my computer and I put it there to show that there is a tremendous amount of things we can learn about through the use of a computer. To me the Internet is the tool that I use the most on my computer. What I love about the internet is that all you need is a click and you can access plenty of information from anywhere in the world. You can access newspapers, books, magazines, maps and the list goes on. The information is all there and you don’t need to leave your house to go and find it. The only thing with using the internet is that we must always check the validity of our information.

I'm used to it now. Without it, my typing would probably be all messed up.
