I had to have my laptop running something while I was driving today for an experiment, and I didn't want to take the time to figure out how to have the laptop run while closed (I was running out of daylight). The alternative was to strap the bad boy into the passenger seat with the display open so that the thing could keep running.

I know it isn't pretty, but the point is that I got my data and my laptop never budged from its spot (and I took a few of those turns a little, ah, spiritedly).

I'm cleaning up today. This is my before picture of my computer desk.

Found this 13 inch LATE 2007 Macbook on eBay. Great condition--maxed to 6GB of ram and installed Lion 10.7 on it. It's a little photoshop/writing computer for me to take with me and to sit on the balcony with. :) I recently surmised that the MINI-DVI port does not work... might be why it was sold

From the Division of Science and Mathematics graduation reception in the Science Atrium.

Today was the 2009 graduation ceremony at the University of Minnesota, Morris. These photos are from the Division of Science and Mathematics reception for graduating science and math students and their families. This included the Computer Science graduates, so there is a bit of a bias in that direction here.

Part of this reception is group photos on the staircase for each major. I took photos of the first two (Biology and Chemistry), but then after Computer Science the faculty ended up doing photos with each graduating CSci student and I missed the rest of the big group photo ops.

Students, families, and UMM folks are totally welcome to use these however they see fit. You're welcome to leave a tip in the jar if you find them useful, however :-).

That's Elysion on the left: a Dell XPS computer with a Pentium 4 HT CPU, 3 GB RAM, some 500+ GB of hard drive space, 2 CD/DVD drives (one burner, one reader), and an OBNOXIOUS number of USB peripherals, running Windows Vista Ultimate.

On the right is the new Ryo-ohki, my Acer Aspire netbook: with it's 10.1 inch screen, puny Intel Atom CPU, 1 GB of RAM, and a 160 GB hard drive split into two partitions - one for the default Windows XP that came with the machine, and the other for Ubuntu Netbook remix (which boots now by default).

All the video screens in the basement of the Eaton Centre were showing this boot message... eventually they'd display one or two more lines, including one that said "no operating system found", then the whole thing would cycle through again.

Maybe it's an ad for Windows 7? :P
