Computation of War Service Gratuity for Norman Henry, 1942
Norman Henry was born in 1916, a member of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. He was a mechanic who financially supported his mother and served in the local militia, before enlisting in the war effort in 1940. Norman was killed in the battle for Dieppe in 1942 and his mother Christine Henry, received a gratuity after his death to compensate for the lost monetary aid. The raid on the French coastal port of Dieppe was the first test for the Canadian army in Europe and it came with disastrous results. More than 900 Canadian soldiers were killed, and thousands more were wounded and taken prisoner.
