A picture of the base at the Gateway Arch. My father said that during the construction, they built from the ground and connected the arch at the top. In a funny twist, the city wanted the arch to be connected in the daylight so that there could be a celebration. Unfortunately, the heat of the afternoon expanded the metal and they had to employ multiple firetrucks to reverse the effects of the heat. Once the metal compressed, they were able to fully connect the arch infront of a massive crowd!
