One of the many passed hor d'oeuvres. It was great to see many attendees trying bites like this for the first time, and to watch their reactions. This is when people watching is at its best. :)
A Compressed Fiddler Crab (Uca coarctata) picks its way across the mud on the banks of a tidal creek at the Cairns Botanical Gardens. This species prefers to inhabit high tidal areas of steep riverbanks or stream banks. Unlike the similar Orange-clawed Fiddler Crab (Uca vomeris), this species prefers muddy substrate over sand or a mix of mud and sand. (Photographed at Flecker Botanic Gardens & Centenary Lakes area of Cairns Botanic Gardens, Cairns, Queensland, Australia)
