My wife wanted a way to sift the large chunks out of the compost so we made this with stuff we had in the garage. The only thing we bought was the mesh.
This is the worm bin in all it's trash-filled glory. It was given to me by a friend, and is working quite nicely now that I've cleaned it out and filled it with fresh bedding and worms and organic fruit & veg scraps.

Witness the compost. I have three of these huge bins, the two you can see here and a new one I'm starting in between them.
I fill these bins with garden scraps, non-seedy weeds, yard trimmings and chicken litter. I don't bother turning them at all. I give them a little water once in a while and then screen them in the spring. Each bin makes 2-3 big garbage cans full of finished compost. I'm not quite to the point where I don't need to buy any compost, but I'm getting there.
I,m about half way through turning the compost into the end bin. This requires the compost to be chopped off vertically, in six inch slices with a spade. Then thrown over into the next bin, ensuring that it breaks up and gets plenty of air in it. Sometimes the compost can be quite dry and needs wetting, but this lot isn,t.

So what's a "compost toilet"??? Just think of it as a "kitty litter box" :-)
Compost toilets have many environmental and financial advantages: they help conserve water, they help reduce the possibility of sewage or groundwater pollution, they eliminate the costs associated with maintaining sewers and septic systems, and their end product is actually beneficial for the environment (compost) instead of polluting.
My hubby's mom lives with us and she enjoys helping in the yard. Here she is having a lovely time watering. A nice Sunday afternoon.
Notice my nice big pile of yard compost in the back. Almost as big as she is. HA.

CUSO co-operant Nicolas Parenteau and Mekong School volunteer Jeremy Mak gather compost material from organic waste on the grounds of the Mekong School, near to the NEED Burma compound.
Nicolas was killed in a motorcycle accident on Feb 22, 2008 in Chiang Mai. He was working with NEED-Burma on integrating their traditional farming practices with newer sustainable agriculture theory. This series is dedicated to his memory.
Totally accidental example that high ISO does not stop you getting detail in a shot. Shot at ISO 800.

Not the best photo, but an amazing cake. All that wonderful edible stuff on top was created by Seah.
This is the leftover after day one of juicing. (Mostly carrots, but also some beets, kale, ginger and cucumber.)
Cate has a very good juicing machine that extracts all of the juice/moisture from the fruit or vegetable and you are left with the dry remains of the original product.. I had been thinking of starting a compost pile, so I am going to save this and read up about compost piles.
I have ambitious plans for my yard next year.
(And yes, I cut my hair short last Friday.)
After a while things will start getting a little more decayed. I'm not turning this bin as much as I should so the egg shells are still whole. Turning is important because it aerates the sample, allowing for oxygen to be mixed into the compost and facilitate decay. Since I'm not using worms because my bins don't have drainage holes, turning is very important.
