Something a bit different for me, a woodland image! It was sort of compelled on me by the weather. I had left home just before 3 am to catch a sunrise with the promise of mist around the Peak District. So, 4.15 am saw me sat on the top of the cliffs at Winnats Pass in what I can only describe as a dense drizzle. I was hoping to give the new Zii and the 14-30 lens a work out but after 4 frames of grey murk, I decided to head back to the car and try Cavedale and Peveril Castle instead. That was similarly dreich although I managed to have a nice chat with a fellow TOG stood in the gloom, hoping! So I cut my losses and headed to Padley Gorge and tried my 24-200 lens in the damp woodland.
I don't have an educated eye for woodland, I confess! (I leave this to fellow Flickr "woodsman", Barry Noon). But this scene seemed to offer some hope. I saw what appeared to be a face in the middle trunk and it looked quite content. So I framed up this shot and the heavens really did open, so I headed to Hope for a bit of breakfast, before chancing my arm on more familiar territory up on Derwent Edge as the weather improved.
Extreme awareness combined with unobtrusiveness becomes the contest the photographer must work within :-)

This evening's sunset was compelling.... and these three photos are unedited, with the exception of some minor cropping of the third one.
I am always compelled to head to the lake on still nights to watch the reflections and I was not disappointed.

“I with a deeper instinct, choose a man who compels my strength, who makes enormous demands on me, who does not doubt my courage or my toughness, who does not believe me innocent or naïve, who has the courage to treat me like a woman.” - Anais Nin
Something about the way these monuments reach far into the sky seems compelling, like they tell a billion year story all by themselves that has a way of reaching to the very core of mans soul. I can't help but play an instantaneous time lapse in my mind of all the events that must have occurred in order to plant this giant rock reaching into the sky. Something big, something that makes me feel small, and part of a timeless world, with a finite amount being my charade.

A misty morning compelled me to visit a local wood. Unfortunately, when I got there, the mist had thinned more than I would have liked. Even so, I thought it was worth trying for some half-decent shots as there are some gorgeous trees in this little wood.
With this particular tree, I was intrigued at the twisty formation of the trunk, so I concentrated on that rather than the whole tree.
This was one occasion when a tripod would have been useful, even though I always shoot handheld. I was shooting at 500 ISO and this was at 1/40 sec. I just about got away with it and was quite pleased with the result under the circumstances. Some of my other shots were even slower!
You don't know the hell I've been through
You don't know the price I've paid
You can't see the walls I'm bracing, time I'm facing, all my days
Every bit of man I once was
Every bit of love that I could have
Living in a moment, setting into motion, all the other fear I had
Nobody help me
I'm not cold, I'm empty
Somebody heal me, hold me, make me know me, hate me
No one can love me
Inside my lonely
Someone won't feel me, show me, make me know me, I'm not safe
You don't know the hell I've been through
You don't know the price I've paid
You can't see the walls I'm bracing, time I'm facing, all my days
Every bit of man I once was
Every bit of love that I could have
Living in a moment, setting into motion, all the other fear I had
I can't compel me
My mind won't stop me
It wants to fail me, hail me, let me carry, help me
And this is my misery
It wants to kill me
It's in my memory, but I'm shaking when it fails me
You don't know the hell I've been through
You don't know the price I've paid
You can't see the walls I'm bracing, time I'm facing, all my days
Every bit of man I once was
Every bit of love that I could have
Living in a moment, setting into motion, all the other fear I had
Take it from me, I've taken a week to feel free
Never a thing, I don't know a thing to fix me
Stuck in my head now
Get me the hell out
Life is a game I don't wanna play, it played me
Lost in my ways, I'm lost and afraid and angry
Nobody help me
I'm not cold, I'm empty
You don't know the hell I've been through
You don't know the price I've paid
You can't see the walls I'm bracing, time I'm facing, all my days

Street photography from Glasgow, Scotland.
A previously unpublished shot from September 2019. A part of Glasgow that I hadn't really wandered before and this caught my eye. I'm not usually a fan of photographing people through windows but there was just something about this that compelled me to shoot. I hope that you all had a great photographic weekend my Flickr friends.
One of the compelling features of wildlife photography is that you never know when you might witness something amazing and whether or not you will be able to capture that amazing moment with a photograph. I know that my photographer friends can all identify with this scenario: You are in the middle of shooting when the action suddenly goes off-the-charts amazing and all you can do is just keep saying out loud "Wow!" "Wow!" "Wow!"(or something to that effect).
The other day I was shooting Ruby-throated Hummingbirds doing their run-of-the-mill routine: a quick fly-in, feed frantically for about 10 seconds, then quickly fly-off. It was during one of these sessions that I witnessed two siblings fly-in, play a little, feed a little and then fly off. The whole time I was shooting I was in amazement at the action and just kept saying "Wow"! I was lucky enough to capture a good number of frames of this encounter and will be posting them over the next several days.
The vibrant orange color of this Zinnia flower compelled me to capture this image. It was only later that I discovered the bug nestled in the middle of it all. "Color provokes a psychic vibration. Color hides a power still unknown but real, which acts on every part of the human body."

Another upload. Pls, do not feel compelled to comment. I have... too many photos and I need to release them and let them go free. I saw this just now, from last Saturday, and well, it is purple. And it is Saturday. Perfect, yes? YES.

My Jacaranda tree at sunset last night. The sky has been on fire the past two evenings and as I’ve felt sad, I just looked on without capturing. But last night, I felt compelled to go out and take a snap with my phone. The colours were breathtaking and it reminded me of the forces greater than myself.

Gadwalls have been described as displaying "understated elegance." I agree and also find them beautiful and compelling.
A lot of wildlife photographers will recognize the situation in which the subject is compelling, but the shooting conditions are crappy.
That's what happened here. The light was harsh and the subjects were down a steep embankment making it impossible to get a good shooting angle. But what we have here is a clash between a Marbled Godwit (right) and a Hudsonian Godwit (left). I couldn't resist posting shot of the rare nature moment. The two species didn't get along very well and entertained us with their squabbling for a few minutes. The outcome of the scuffle was a surprise. The smaller HG made a nifty move and jabbed its bill into the chest of the MG. That must have smarted and the bigger bird immediately left the vicinity.
This twofer is fifth in my shorebird series. One more tomorrow.

This isn't a spectacular photo, but one that I felt compelled to post because the colors were just so brilliant on the Eastern side of the Great Sand Dunes along Medano Creek, especially along the Northern section on the Medano Pass Primitive Road near First Crossing. The sun had already peaked and was working it way towards a sunset, but hadn't as yet been masked in the creek by the dunes giving full lighting onto the creek bottom trees and shrubs, as well as, the Western mountain slop and casting some shadows onto the Eastern sloping of the dunes. The other reason for posting this image was to also mention how great it was to have perfectly dry feet while standing in the middle of this creek and after hiking in it for a good distance. I am a Keen professional and use their shoes and socks at work and in outdoor adventures. In this case I was waring a pair of Keen Targhee II waterproof shoes. True as advertised. Dry feet while stomping around in the creek. Also foot sweat was absence while hiking in the dunes and along trail. For the readers of this post, all I can say is that it is worth your while trying on a pair at a good quality outdoor gear store where there is a rocky testing area. You'll be amazed. Or check out their website at www.keenfootwear.com. One final note is that their socks are tagged as a right and left sock, which reduces the sock bunching in the toe socket of the shoe. Check out these other flickr photos from this location, see: Great Sand Dune Pano and Great Sand Dune Grass.
Well, I said I would be back in the fall and here I am.
We are all well. We had a very busy summer doing a lot of cleaning chores and just trying to escape the ridiculous heat here in Southern California.
It occurred to me that I was beginning to film the same ole same ole. I hate to be boring. So, I think I will only post new series when I have something novel and fun or exciting to share. Otherwise, I know I am just posting to post. Let's face it, there are people here who are real photographers -- not just dabbling as I am. They are the ones to visit for true visual art.
My photostream is really story telling. So, when I have a compelling new story, I will be posting.
I miss every one of you and think of you often. So, I don't want to lose touch. I am going to look at my recent photos and add them here if I think they are interesting.
Hugs to you all!

There are certain places that you feel compelled to visit and photograph to the best of your ability and Bodiam Castle has long hovered somewhere around the top of my UK wish list for a good few years now.
I had an opportunity to visit it with a couple of friends of mine, Steve and June, on day 17 of my recent 26 day tour of the UK. We arrived a few minutes before sunset having just consumed a lovely meal in the Castle Inn pub across the road.
The colours were present on arrival and a quick set up of the wonderfully symmetrical castle (it must have been created for landscape photographers with a slight OCD tendency for symmetrical objects, lol) and it's beautiful wooden walkway to the front of the castle. We were treated to some wonderful subtle colours in the sky and this was one of those moments where I just stood there drinking in the happy feelings in finally ticking this castle off my list.
I hope you all like the photo and have a great weekend everyone.

When life becomes too rushed, my soul compels me to nature. In fact, it steers me from people and into silence. Escaping to still quiet waters in a kayak or a boat delivers calm.

Thank you all for your faves and comments, which make me want to continue my modest contribution to sharing with all of you😊
We don't have too many waterfalls in this region so whenever I pass by one of the few, I feel compelled to take a picture. Even when the waterfall is man-made.
Without a doubt the most photographed view of downtown Boston, but one you feel compelled to try if you're in the neighborhood. Best attempted on a cold winter morning (like this one) when you'll likely have the place mostly to yourself. This was taken just before the B&W version I posted way back. I've learned a few things in the interim, like how to use the Nik Collection and correct for lens distortion in Lightroom.
For a variety of reasons photography has not been in the cards for me of late. Looking forward to getting back into the swing in the near future (hopefully). My apologies for being largely absent from your photostreams.

Tidbits: Directly behind me is the Moakley Federal Courthouse, headquarters for the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit and the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts, and venue for some recent high profile trials, including that of mobster James "Whitey" Bulger, and surviving Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.
Winter is upon us yet I am compelled to share this photo from May 2019, as we rode through the Polish countryside on our way to Zakopane. It was my turn that early morning on the tour coach to be seated in front with full unobstructed views through the large windshield. A mild rain was falling and as the wipers passed I took the shot and upon upload I liked the deep satuated colors and details in the landscape, so although Spring is off in the distance for a number of months I can still feel that early seasonal change when I look at this, your comments welcome as always.
When I arrived here last April there was a large branch laying in the wash. I thought someone left their walking stick and began to shoot it as I found it. Not long after, a couple other branches shot out from the falls onto the sandstone and I realized the forest was doing a little spring cleaning via this small stream feeding Superior. I cannot recall ever "tweaking" a landscape for a photograph, but in this instance I felt compelled to remove them. I had driven a ways to get here and wanted a couple shots without any clutter on what is otherwise an absolutely pristine shoreline.
That's never compelled me. There has to be something that pulls me in; I have to have a reason to press the shutter. I think that there's something essential about the impulse to record something; I don't take pictures just to take pictures. There has to be something about a place or a person that I recognize, that I need to record or remember or think about again :-)

Funny how I feel compelled to take photos of squirrels whenever I'm out and about when there are plenty of squirrels in my own yard. But this little fellow caught my attention when he scampered up this tree and then started fussing at us when we passed by.
He was not happy at all, and did not hesitate in the least to let us know! Apparently some squirrels just don't like paparazzi in any shape or form.

Shot this today and felt compelled to put this at the front of the line of photos I have waiting to post on Flickr. It's one of those places that's just magic, undiscovered by tourists and even most locals.
Captures from one of my favorite locations in New York City, Grand Central Station. The architecture, the lighting, the mood, the people; the entire environment add up to a compelling and unique environment for photography.
Opposing steep grades make for a compelling photograph as Utah Railway's 'Wattis Turn' goes about its business at the Wattis coal mine on a sunny Aug. 13, 1985 morning. The BN F45s and SP SD45 were on lease from NRE, and had only been loading coal in Utah for four months.
