"The splendor of friendship is not the outstretched hand nor the gentle smile nor the joy of companionship: it is the spiritual inspiration when we discover that someone believes in us and is willing to trust us". Ralph Waldo Emerson
“I had already found that it was not good to be alone, and so made companionship with what there was around me, sometimes with the universe and sometimes with my own insignificant self; but my books were always my friends, let fail all else.”
― Joshua Slocum, Sailing Alone around the World

Sassetta Cat (Livorno)
The cat is a figure present in all ages and cultures, often elevated to the rank of divinity. For the ancient Egyptians it was considered sacred and was depicted in paintings, sculptures, engravings, and was associated with the cult of the goddess Isis, goddess who had her own kingdom in the night. The dark ages of the Middle Ages represent an era of persecution of the cat, which was even seen as the reincarnation of witches and evil spirits.
The cat has always had equivocal influences on the human soul: an affectionate yet independent animal, capable of instilling love and companionship, but often detached and opportunistic.

Companionship with the Milky Way in Pine Forest
A path through the rich pine forest of Skyros which began in the afternoon came to an end late, shortly after nightfall, we found the company of the galaxy over us to signal us the beauty of the night sky in the beautiful island ...
Thanks to all members for your companionship during 2021. I look forward to all your images in 2022. Here's hoping that the upcoming year continues to improve for all of us.
I'd also like to mention Maria Godfrida. She works so hard in the group, keeping it running smoothly. Thanks Maria.
Filling every "empty space" around.
When you feel like you have everything even when you have nothing around you.
A simple image is enough to remind you that.
"When I have you
I can dream again.
I open sails in the sea
and I hold between my hands
the world to fix.
When I have you
I can not sink slowly
the evenings when the heart is broken
and I grab the knife
To carve the darkness.
Take a step
and I will do the next one.
My blood and shape,
reason and soul in context.
When I have you
I feel like a child, I have someone,
don't be afraid of anyone,
you and me in the world,
the inhuman.
You and me.
When I have you...
When I have you
I can paint rust with silver.
I can sleep with confidence,
to catch with my hands
Dragons to kill.
When I have you
I can stand going next to the cliff.
I know I have a hand to hold,
someone near me
to unite my years..."
Natural ice in the Netherlands is a rare occurrence. In fact, some winters there's no natural ice at all. Maybe that explains why the Dutch love to skate outdoors. They hardly ever get the chance! But when a cold wave hits, and the interconnected maze of canals, rivers and lakes freeze over, it's a spontaneous celebration, a national holiday. Businesses close their doors and everyone goes skating.
The Alblasserwaard tour starts in the town of Kinderdijk, a tourist mecca famous for its windmills. (Molentocht means windmill tour.) The Krimpenerwaard is one of the oldest polders in Holland, dotted with ancient villages, and you can skate through nine of them in a day. (Negendorpentocht means Nine Villages Tour.) You can read about the area's history in this Krimpenerwaard site.
Aside from the scenery, the joys of Dutch skating are the companionship of other skaters, and the delicious food served up along the canals. With so many skaters on the ice, you're guaranteed to find someone who skates at your speed, and gets hungry or thirsty with the same regularity.
I have long believed that thankfulness is an attitude, a state of being if you will. It is simply the ability to see one's blessings as gifts and not as what we deserve. I have so many blessings in my life in the form of relationships that I cannot even begin to list them all. I'll never deserve the love and companionship that I share with my immortal beloved, Mony, nor the genuine paternal affection that I feel for and from my daughter, Star. But, I am so grateful for them that my heart swells with joy on a daily bases.
I give thanks also for all of my dear SL family and friends as well as all of you amazing people in Flickr who follow and encouragement constantly. God bless you richly and may this Thanksgiving find you with a grateful heart.
“I have found that when you are deeply troubled, there are things you get from the silent devoted companionship of a dog that you can get from no other source.”
– Doris Day

The Lighthouse
The lighthouse
Sitting atop its rocky throne
Seeing the world
But only as the stars
Cool and distant
All the while longing to be part of that world
And so the lighthouse
Sitting atop its rocky prison
Confined to purpose
Withering away by loneliness
Beckons boats to its shores
It’s beacon a cry in the night for companionship
But boats only sail on
And so the lighthouse
sits alone
A thing of beauty
Longing in the night for someone
Only to wake alone
For itself pushed the boats away
And so I stand here
A lighthouse
Destined for purpose doomed by myself
A conflicted soul
A lonely soul I stand~ Michael Nerud
All the presents are wrapped and under the tree. Happy Christmas everyone. All the best for the New Year and thanks sincerely for your companionship in 2022.

A photograph is more than just
A gift to bring or send.
And more than just the likeness of
A relative or friend.
It is a kindly greeting and
A memory to hold.
Of happy times and pleasant things.
However new or old.
It is a mirror that reflects
Companionship and cheer.
And now and then the wistfulness
That turns into a tear.
A photograph is something to
Adorn a desk or wall.
Or carry in a pocket and
Display to one and all.
It is a faithful portrait
The smile that friendship shares
To add its sunshine and to show
That someone really cares.

Built on a small plateau near the ravine with a cypress and other trees as companionship, this small church impresses with its simplicity. White walls, red roof and a blue door, matched with clear sky. But I forgot to ask what they called it, and I could not find out. Thus I will arbitrarily call it: "To the unknown Saint"

I felt alone
until night rose up to greet me
and offered its comfort.
Companionship in solitude
is always a welcome reprieve.
We were alone
together
and that was enough;
Night held onto me
without a word or a touch
but it was there, present,
Its silence was pure
not filtered like my own
It gave me space
yet surrounded me
both protective and open
asking nothing,
Its presence gave me peace.

Isolation facilitates the best kind of companionship. That of being alone with yourself and learning to be comfortable where you are with what you have.

I stood out under the pines and looked down and there she was. Waiting for food and companionship like she did so many times before. Like she is doing in this photo. But then I woke and realized it was only a dream. I got dressed and went out to search just one more time. But she has not returned. I'll go out and search one more time, a thousand more times and call her name. It's what I do.

Another shot of Kusama's Installation at the Botanical Gardens of NYC.
A few months ago, I watched the Yayoi Kusama documentary Infinity (on Hulu) and fell in love with this artist. I was in NYC and a fellow photographer let me know that the Botanical Gardens actually had an exhibit of hers embedded within their grounds called Cosmic Nature and I was super excited. Here's one of those pieces (Kusama is in her 90s and still creating art and she seems especially fond of pumpkins) I photographed recently on my trip to NYC.
If you live in NYC, I highly recommend visiting the New York Botanical Gardens and seeing this exhibit yourself. You can purchase tickets here:
www.nybg.org/event/kusama/plan-your-visit/
If you don't live in NYC but would like to watch the documentary, here's information about that:

Asun García Mainar passed away on Jul. 16th, 2017, after a short but tough illness, leaving behind a trail of light, love, sensitivity and sensibility which will remain in those who met her for good. Her social and ecological commitment broke through grassroots communities, trade-unions, social enterprises... The memory of her companionship does not mollify the pain we feel for her absence, but it reinforces our hope, and it always invites us to turn the energy we waste in criticizing and getting angry into positive feelings and actions.

A year when family, friends and health have never seemed more precious, and I've felt closer than ever to those I'd normally see often, even while we've been kept apart.
A year to say a huge thank you to all those in our NHS and other frontline workers who continue to put themselves at risk to keep us safe.
A year to be thankful for work which has brought joy, energy and the companionship of colleagues as well as many new challenges and worries.
A year to feel ever more grateful for the nature that is close to home, and the opportunity to be immersed in it.
A year to say a huge thank you to my friends here on Flickr who have shown so much kindness and generosity, though I have spent much less time here than I would like.
Here's to wishing 2021 brings hope, health, stability and peace to many more people worldwide, and the opportunity to be closer to those they love.

Memories of the last snowstorm of winter. There is my new furry friend with her dad. She let me take the photo of her that day. This puppy is in the process of becoming a therapy dog for someone who needs her companionship and love. I think we aren't going to have any more snow this year, that was the last snowfall here...hopefully. Now waiting for spring.

Once upon a time, in a Russian monastery nestled amidst serene surroundings in Munich-Blutenburg, there lived a cat named Tiger. This majestic feline had found his home within the monastery's walls, where he dutifully protected the sacred space from mischievous mice.
Tiger was no ordinary cat; he possessed an extraordinary bond with the monks. They affectionately referred to him as their guardian and cherished his presence. Tiger reciprocated their love with unwavering loyalty and an affection for people.
For many years, Tiger roamed the monastery's corridors, his graceful strides echoing through the hallowed halls. Monks and visitors alike found solace in his gentle purring and soothing presence. He was a symbol of warmth and companionship in the tranquil haven.
However, as time passed, Tiger's age began to catch up with him. His once-vibrant spirit slowly waned, and this year, he peacefully departed from the realm of the living. The monastery was filled with sorrow, as the loss of their beloved feline friend left an emptiness in their hearts.
In honor of Tiger's remarkable service and the love he shared with all who crossed his path, the monks decided to lay him to rest in a place of beauty and serenity. Beneath the gentle shade of palm trees that graced the monastery garden, they dug a final resting place for Tiger.
With utmost reverence, the monks gently carried Tiger's lifeless body to his eternal resting spot. The sun's rays filtered through the palm fronds, casting a soft glow upon the ceremony. Tears mingled with bittersweet smiles as the monks bid their dear friend farewell.
Tiger's memory would forever linger within the monastery's walls. The tale of his loyalty and his unwavering protection against the mice would be passed down through generations of monks, reminding them of the extraordinary bond they had shared with a remarkable cat.
And so, beneath the swaying palms in the monastery garden, Tiger found eternal peace. His spirit surely continus to watch over the hallowed grounds, forever cherished in the hearts of those who had been touched by his friendship and love.
