This is Como Lake from California Pass. You can see the road I drove from Hurricane Pass to California. Hurricane Pass is left center of this photo.
My favorite combination drive is Corkscrew Gulch, Hurricane Pass and California Pass to Animas Forks.

My visit to Monza Cathedral dedicated to John the Baptist. In its original essence completed by 603. Inside is the "iron Crown" one of the oldest royal insignia of Christendom made in the Early Middle Ages. It consists of a circlet of gold and jewels fitted around a central silver band, which tradition held to be made of iron beaten out of a nail of the True Cross.
I find the location of lake of Como very interesting: mountains and lake without a compromise between these two extremes.
Captured with a wideangles lens and an ND4 filter.
Como Lake is located between Hurricane and California Passes. It requires a 4wheel drive vehicle with good tires to get to it. Hurricane Pass has an elevation of 12,730 feet and California has an elevation of 12,970 feet.
Continuing down California Pass takes you to Animas Forks Ghost Town.
This is the drive I do my first full day in the San Juans.

Como Lake can be seen from both California Pass and Hurricane Pass. You can see Hurricane Pass where to road on the left side ends.
I usually do these pass roads on the first full day I have in the San Juans.
Big fat snowflakes are falling on my favorite path around the lake. And another 10 cm is expected today !

Lake Como, in northern Italy, is considered one of the most beautiful lakes in Europe. I think the town of Varenna is one of it's most beautiful villages, ahead of Como, and even Bellagio. Varenna is much less commercial and more quaint. Walking its narrow cobblestone streets was a great cultural experience and a journey through history. However, the best overall view of this village is from the water. I took this early morning "Blue Hour" photo of this sleepy village from a rented boat, or "water taxi".
