A community project to brighten our days

Groningen is a Dutch city known for its rich history and vibrant cultural scene. And since 2019 it is home to a modern marvel that seamlessly blends the old and the new: the Forum Groningen. This architectural gem stands tall in the heart of the city, captivating both locals and visitors with its innovative design and multifaceted purpose.

It is a Contemporary Masterpiece. The Forum Groningen stands as a symbol of modernity against the backdrop of the city's traditional architecture. Designed by NL Architects in collaboration with the Swiss firm Swiss architects Happel Cornelisse Verhoeven, the building boasts a contemporary and dynamic aesthetic that challenges the conventional.

The building has a unique geometry. Consisting of various stacked cubes and angular shapes, the building presents a visually captivating facade that seems to defy gravity. The architects' choice of form not only adds an element of surprise but also maximizes the use of space within the structure.

The forum is a multi-purposeful development. Beyond its avant-garde exterior, the Forum Groningen houses a versatile space that serves a multitude of functions. It hosts a public library, a state-of-the-art cinema, exhibition spaces, and even a rooftop terrace that offers panoramic views of the city. This intentional integration of diverse functions reflects the architects' commitment to creating a space that caters to the varied interests and needs of the community.

Beyond its architectural prowess, the Forum Groningen is a cultural hub that pulsates with creativity. It hosts a wide array of events, from film festivals to literary gatherings, making it a dynamic space that fosters community engagement and artistic expression. It even houses a publicly available 3D print shop. The building's open design invites individuals to explore and interact, creating a sense of connectivity within the city.

Technical stuff

This is a single handheld shot taken with a Canon G5X. The setting were: 640ISO, -2/3EV, f5.6, 1/25 and 8.8mm. Although, this camera, in Canon’s G-series Powershot range, is versatile and quite good in most all circumstances, it is indoors a little bit strong on noise in the higher ISO-ranges. So, I thought this was a great opportunity to test the recently added AI-driven noise reduction tool in Lightroom. I think, this tool did a great job. Especially with regard to keeping the crisp sharpness of the image. Unfortunately such tools ask rather a lot of processor capacity of one computer… So, you guessed it, a new project is born!

Furthermore, I converted the colour RAW photo into black-and-white with Lightroom and balanced the toning a little. Finally, I added the copyright signs (in Photoshop). The latter is, alas, there to stay due to the frequent copying of my photos. So, don't bother commenting on that.

The former tramways substation was erected in 1929-30, during a period of tramways expansion which followed the Brisbane City Council's 1925 acquisition of the tramways system from the Brisbane Tramways Trust. It was erected on Cook's Hill, along the Paddington line, on land which was formerly part of the adjacent Ithaca Fire Station.

The Brisbane Tramways Company, a private enterprise formed in 1895, introduced the first electric trams to Brisbane in mid-1897. Following lobbying by the Ithaca Shire Council, a tramway was extend along Musgrave Road to Red Hill, and a line was laid along Caxton Street and Given Terrace as far as Latrobe Terrace in 1898. The Red Hill line was extended to Ashgrove in 1924, and the Paddington line was extended to Bardon in 1937. The spread of the tramways network was a catalyst for residential development in the western suburbs.

In 1926 the Greater Brisbane Council, anxious to control the city's electricity supply, decided to build its own power house at New Farm, under the supervision of the BCC Tramways Department. Opened on 28 June 1928, New Farm distributed 11000 kW AC power to a network of eleven suburban tramway substations erected in the 1920s and 1930s. The function of the Paddington substation, the seventh in the network, was to assist the Petrie Terrace substation (erected 1927-28) in providing a better distribution of power to the increased western suburbs tram services.

Considerable attention was given to the design of these substations. Roy Rusden Ogg, the tramways' architect and construction engineer from 1926 until the late 1930s, in conjunction with tramways' chief engineers Nelson (1925-26) and Arundell (1926-49?), designed at least ten Brisbane substations between 1926 and 1936, and the first two stages of the New Farm powerhouse (1927-29 and 1934-36). Ogg also designed the Tramways Department's Head Office building on Coronation Drive (1929). The Paddington substation, constructed of bricks and structural steel from the old Countess Street power house (closed in mid-1928), was the first of his substation designs to incorporate a parapet wall, flat roof and exterior render.

The Paddington substation was automatic, equipped with an 1100 KVA transformer, a British-Thomson-Houston 1000 kW rotary converter, switchgear, support services, and an overhead crane (designed by the Tramways Department). The substation received 11000 volts AC electricity from the New Farm Power station, via an underground feeder cable. The transformer reduced this supply, which the rotary converter then converted to 600 volts DC for the tramways network.

The substation commenced operation on 11 August 1930 and remained in service until the phasing out of Brisbane's trams in the late 1960s. In 1969 the Paddington line was closed, the substation's electrical equipment was removed, and the building became a storage depot. In 1985, Hands On Art was given a fifteen year lease of the building.

a mown path across part of Knaresborough Forest Park community owned land near Knaresborough, North Yorkshire, England.

Great to see a newly repaired stile and a nice mown path across one of the meadows in the new Knaresborough Forest Park yesterday, which greatly enhanced my walk to Jubilee Allotments!

Very pleased to have shares in this project and to see progress being made already. You can find out more and buy shares at knaresboroughforestpark.org

There's still a lot of fundraising required (and asap to avoid paying interest on the loan used to buy some of the land) so please consider joining in and/or share the info if you can!

As evening settles over 17th Street NW near R Street in Washington, D.C.’s Dupont Circle, the city’s character shines in warm light and bold colors. These historic red-brick rowhouses—some with turrets, bay windows, and cornices—have been lovingly restored and now host independent businesses, from Julia’s Empanadas to neighborhood cafes and services. A softly glowing pharmacy sign, twinkling interior lights, and a covered outdoor dining area create a cozy urban rhythm.

The turreted red building near the corner captures the eye, not only for its architecture but as a symbol of this area’s vibrancy and cultural richness. A U-Haul trailer on the side hints at the constant ebb and flow of city life, while a rainbow pride flag and painted crosswalk reflect the neighborhood’s deep ties to LGBTQ+ visibility and inclusion. Leafless trees frame the block, and bike lanes and pedestrian signage show off D.C.’s commitment to walkability and urban design.

This photo celebrates the intersection of history and modernity: 19th-century buildings reimagined for 21st-century life, a community that embraces change while honoring its roots. Whether stopping by for empanadas, gathering for conversation under heated lamps, or simply strolling home, this block glows with the quiet joy of everyday city life.

Seating for those having a bite to eat at Mercato Mayfair, a deconsecrated church. - now a community hub.

This grand Neo-Classical landmark in Harrogate was designed by the renowned architectural duo Lockwood & Mawson and completed in 1862 to serve a flourishing Victorian Methodist congregation. Its imposing Corinthian façade and bold symmetry reflect the confidence of the age. Originally known as Wesley Chapel, it featured a powerful JJ Binns organ (installed in 1912) to accompany choir and congregation. Over the decades, it has adapted — undergoing major redevelopments in 1904, 1960 and 1994, the latter ensuring accessibility for all.

In 2014, it was reimagined as The Wesley Centre, becoming a multi-use venue while remaining a place of worship. Now home to concerts, exhibitions, and community services (including Harrogate Homeless Project’s Springboard day centre), it continues to serve both spirit and society in equal measure.

At the golden edge of dusk, the Keegan Theatre’s red-brick façade glows warmly against a clear Washington, D.C. sky. Located at 1742 Church Street NW in the Dupont Circle neighborhood, this former church building has been transformed into one of the city’s most beloved intimate performing arts venues. With light spilling softly from its symmetrical arched windows and entryway, the building invites visitors in with the promise of storytelling, creativity, and community.

Originally built in 1905 as the Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, this structure has seen the neighborhood around it evolve dramatically over the past century. Its dignified Romanesque design—with rounded-arch windows, decorative brickwork, and modest stone trim—retains the gravitas of its ecclesiastical origins while now embracing a lively new purpose as a theater.

Posters flank the entrance announcing upcoming performances, while the LGBTQ+ pride flag waves proudly above the doorway, signaling the venue’s inclusive spirit. The modern glass expansion to the left harmonizes gracefully with the original architecture, showcasing how adaptive reuse can balance heritage with growth.

This image captures more than just a theater; it reflects the soul of a city that values art, diversity, and historic preservation. It’s a moment of stillness before the lights go down and the curtain rises.
