In Pond Inlet, where the sea ice stretches to the horizon and supply ships arrive only a few months each year, reliable energy is more than convenience—it is survival. The generating station powers homes, schools, health services, and the small businesses that sustain daily life in this northern hamlet.
In a place where winter temperatures can plunge far below –45°C, steady electricity keeps families warm, preserves food, and ensures that communications and essential services remain connected to the outside world. Beyond immediate needs, dependable power also supports hunters and outfitters, enables research and cultural programs, and provides the foundation for integrating renewable energy projects that reduce dependence on costly diesel.
In the high Arctic, where isolation and climate extremes define existence, the generating station stands as the heartbeat of the community—quietly ensuring resilience, safety, and the promise of a sustainable future.
The Cultural Landscape of Sistelo, located in the municipality of Arcos de Valdevez, is an emblematic example of traditional terraced agriculture, adapted to the steep slopes of the Vez River valley. This agricultural system, which uses dry stone walls to build terraces, allows the cultivation of land that would otherwise be unproductive and contributes to erosion control and rainwater management. Historically, the rotation of crops such as corn, beans, and pastures for livestock, combined with irrigation techniques using levadas, reflects knowledge passed down through generations. The importance of this landscape culminated in its classification as a National Monument and its nomination as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognizing community resilience and the balanced relationship between man and the environment. Sistelo, often referred to as “Portuguese Tibet” due to its appearance, reveals the symbiosis between agricultural practices and biodiversity, making it a valued destination for nature and rural tourism.

"On Saturday, January 31st, we held the first of what we expect to be many
inspiring community workshops using the "Open Space" approach. The topic of
the day was the Future of Local Food, or, "How will we feed ourselves in the
decades to come?" About 50 community members showed up at United Methodist
Church, rarin' to sink their minds into the topic together (and their teeth
into the delightful organic lunch we provided)." Read more. Shared by Michael Levy,

Back alley vibes in Buffalo’s Fillmore District — a muralized owl keeps watch over the Twilight Grill, where the grit of the streets mixes with simple moments of connection. Life here has its shadows, but also its small sparks of community, laughter, and resilience.
Transition Denver banner has been working alongside the Living Earth Center, the Mile High Business Alliance and Denver Botanic Gardens to create the Grow Local Colorado Campaign. The goals of the campaign include growing local food, local community and local economy, as well as encouraging 2009 new gardens in 2009. Denver’s Mayor John Hickenlooper attended a media event and campaign celebration and proclaimed May 14 as Grow Local day. He also announced a new vegetable garden in Civic Center Park in front of the City and County Building, and Transition Denver will be helping with that garden.
The photo shows Transition Denver supporter Barbara Masoner as she presents the Mayor with a basket of locally grown and produced goodies, as well as a Transition Handbook. Check out our new Transition Denver banner banner in the heart of it all!

Executive Produced by award-winning actor and activist Rosario Dawson, The North Pole: Season Two is a political comedy web series about four friends in North Oakland, California, who fight, dream, and plot hilarious schemes to stay rooted as their neighborhood becomes a hostile environment. In the highly anticipated new season, Benny, Nina, Marcus, and Finn face up against ICE agents and shady sheriffs, wildfires and white supremacists – along the way discovering their own power and purpose in this riotous journey of laughter and liberation.
In 2018, UCI hosted The North Pole Show team to share Season 1 with our campus. We welcomed the team back to debut Season 2 with our students, staff, faculty, and community collaborators. These events were offered in conjunction with our campus’ MLK Week activities on January 22 and 23, 2020.

This image by Duncan Rawlinson captures the overwhelming intensity and emotional weight of the Los Angeles wildfires in January 2025. Blending photography and AI, the piece vividly portrays ferocious flames and suffocating smoke engulfing vast areas, leaving thousands displaced and communities in ruins. This catastrophe was a disaster compounded by a failure of leadership in California, where insufficient preparation and inadequate responses left many vulnerable in the face of an unstoppable inferno. The artwork reflects the heartbreak, anger, and resilience sparked by this tragedy.

"Our first 24 tons of pellets for this year have already been subscribed and
will be delivered this week. The rising price of propane and our creation of
our coop are enabling more people to switch to this renewable source of
energy for home heating. We have orders for half of our second 24-ton
delivery filled..."

"Neighborhood Supported Agriculture is a South Boulder CO neighborhood-based initiative that serves to build community self-sufficiency through intensive food production and distribution, by using urban land, in the form of a patchwork collection of front yard, backyard and church plots and powered by community volunteer effort. We are taking steps to bring this NSA approach to the Louisville Transition."
