The grasslands had several of these Harriers - mostly Pallid and Montagu's. The birds in this grassland were a bit shy unlike the grasslands we visited a couple of weeks ago.

The Harriers were readying to roost for the day. They would perch on posts or small rocks like this and wait till dark. Then they would come together near each other in a communal roost.

We could not get a straight shot in many of the take off positions like this one. The birds just flew opposite to us most of the time.

They build their mud nests on cliff faces, bridges, highway overpasses, culverts and under eaves. Their nests are communal, one next to the other. These were under the eaves of a park maintenance building, a challenging lighting situation.

Having grown weary of the winter, the Blessed family decides to take a vacation to the East. Little did they know, the communal resort they decide upon was designed by a wealthy businessman who had very little knowledge of the culture. The result was an eclectic mixture of both Eastern and Western styles.

"The mossy marble statue stood proudly to the side of the entrance to the Halls of Story, cradling in its arms a closed book.

It seemed to me it was guarding ancient tales of magic and wisdom, waiting for the right audience to start storytelling for them."

Zoar is a village in Tuscarawas County, Ohio, that was founded by German religious separatists in 1817, and survived as a communal settlement for more than 80 years. Many of the original buildings still exist, as does a large public garden that occupies a central area of the village. The gardens, part of which are seen here, are said to be preserved and maintained as they were in the 1800s.

Another shot from my trip to Well's last week.

No visit to Wells is complete without a visit to this famous spot, and on Wednesday last week, I managed to get it free of people for all of five minutes which was just enough time for me to get the shot I wanted.

Vicars’ Close, adjoining Wells Cathedral, is believed to be the most complete example of a medieval Close in the UK. This significant landmark was designed to provide communal accommodation for the Vicars Choral, who sang daily worship within the Cathedral. This centuries-old tradition continues today and is a unique and much valued part of life at Wells Cathedral.

The houses of the close were built in the 14th century under direction from Bishop Ralph of Shrewsbury and the iconic chimneys were added in the 15th century. Originally 42 houses were built (one per vicar), but some were combined following the Reformation when vicars were allowed to marry. Today, the Close comprises 27 residences, a chapel, library, treasury and muniment room. There is also a dining hall connected to the Cathedral by a covered walkway, the Chain Gate Bridge.

Reflecting the Close’s significance, all its buildings are Grade I listed. The current occupants still include all twelve men of the Vicars Choral, plus the organists and virgers. Vicars Choral have remained at the heart of life at Wells Cathedral since the 1100s and are now recognised as a world-class choir.

Hyenas give birth in a communal den, however there is no communal care for the pups. Not even the fathers take a role in caring for the pups. Liter sizes in Hyenas are very small, consisting of 1-4 pups. Hyena pups are born with their eyes open and teeth!!

Hyenas live in clans. A clan, which is separated into packs, can contain up to 80 individuals!! Although Hyenas are also considered cooperative hunters, they are competitive in nature and will fight within the clan for food or dominance.

Female dominance within groups: The core of the clan is comprised of related females forming a hierarchy. In fact the instinctive desire for dominance is so strong in Hyenas that newborn pups will fight immediately after birth to gain dominance and right to food. It is estimated that 1 in 4 hyena pups die within the first month due to sibling fighting.

Hyenas are significantly more aggressive than African Wild Dogs. Hyenas have even been known to confront lions: not for food, but to fight. Hyenas are closer related to mongooses and cats. – Wikipedia

The mountain of Bueren is a staircase of 374 steps (with a slope of 30%) of the city of Liège connecting the Féronstrée district and Hors-Château with the Peri and with the citadel crossing Coteaux.

This imposing staircase perpetuates the memory of Vincent de Bueren (c. 1440-1505), a nobleman of Gueldrian origin, who, at the head of the Six hundred Franchimontois, was one of the most ardent defenders of Liege against the Duke of Burgundy, Charles the Bold.

Each year, the first Saturday of October, since 1994, during the Nocturne, Coteaux de la Citadelle, the staircase plunged into darkness, is lit by thousands of candles presenting to the public a shimmering spectacle1. Since 2010, another spectacular event is held every two years (even years) and in June: Bueren en Fleurs. A magnificent floral fresco, very photogenic, composed by about 25,000 plants and imagined by the Plantations Department of the City of Liege, is installed on the steps by the staff of this municipal service. These two events were initiated by the Alderman of Tourism of the City of Liège.

The Huffington Post lists Bueren Mountain in 2013 as "the most extreme staircase in the world"

Hemis (India) - The Hemis Monastery (Ladakh) resembles a small village centered around a central square. Behind the main temple, which faces the esplanade, there are a multitude of alleys and buildings. Walking randomly through these very narrow streets, I reached the foot of the stairs leading to the communal dining room. I was unable to access it, remaining at the foot of the stairs because the cooks were kicking out the monks who were lingering.

Amélie-les-Bains-Palalda, Vallespir, Occitanie, France.

Brown Treecreeper

Scientific Name: Climacteris picumnus

Description: The Brown Treecreeper is the largest of Australia's treecreepers. It is mostly pale brown in plumage. Birds of northern Queensland are darker brown. The head, throat and upper breast are pale greyish-brown, while the lower breast and belly are strongly streaked with black and buff. In flight, a buff stripe can be seen in the wing. The sexes are similar, except females have rufous edges to the feathers of the upper breast, while in the male these edges are black. Young Brown Treecreepers resemble the adults, but are duller, have less obvious stripes on the underparts and the lower belly is a pale rufous colour.

Similar species: Other treecreeper species that overlap in range with the Brown Treecreeper include the White-browed Treecreeper, Climacteris affinis, and the White-throated Treecreeper, Cormobates leucophaeus. The White-browed Treecreeper is darker grey-brown with a more distinct white stripe above the eye (edged with red-brown in the female). The eyebrow of the Brown Treecreeper is less distinct and is more buff. The smaller White-throated Treecreeper has much darker upperparts, a contrasting white throat and little or no marks above the eye.

Where does it live?

Habitat: Found in the drier open forests and woodlands, the Brown Treecreeper stays in the same area all year round.

Feeding: The Brown Treecreeper climbs up the trunks and branches of trees in search of food. It probes into cavities and under loose bark with its long downward curving bill. In this way it searches for insects and their larvae. The most favoured insects are ants. Some feeding also takes place on the ground on fallen logs. Sometimes, birds can be seen diving on ground-dwelling prey from a perch in a tree. Feeding normally takes place in pairs or small groups.

Breeding: The nest is a collection of grasses, feathers and other soft material, placed in a suitable tree hollow or similar site. Both sexes build the nest, but the female alone incubates the eggs. Pairs often have two broods during each breeding season. Occasionally, other birds ("helpers") assist the breeding pair with building of nest and feeding the young chicks. Brown Treecreepers are highly sociable birds, living and breeding communally. Each year, the previous year's offspring will remain to help the breeding male feed the female and rear new chicks. Interestingly, it is usually only males which remain to perform this duty.

Calls: The Brown Treecreeper has a loud 'spink' call, which is given either singly or in a series, and normally betrays its presence before the bird is seen.

Minimum Size: 16cm

Maximum Size: 18cm

Average size: 17cm

Average weight: 33g

Breeding season: June to January

Clutch Size: 2 to 3 eggs

Incubation: 17 days

Nestling Period: 26 days

The photos of our stay in France in August 2021 are coming to an end, here is a new album dedicated to a day in Brussels with the aim of visiting the exhibition "Art with a view" in the Proximus tower in Schaerbeek, Brussels.

The new building of the municipal administration of Etterbeek was designed by the architectural office "Jaspers-Eyers Architects" in association with the BAEB office. It was awarded the title of "Best International Building / Public Service Category" at the "International Property Awards 2020", awarded by professionals in the real estate sector, in London.

The construction of the new town hall is part of a larger real estate project called the Jardins de la Chasse. The site concerned extends between Avenue des Casernes and Rue de Haerne; it covers an area of 3 hectares and provides, among other things, for the subsequent creation of more than 200 new housing units, collective services and a new green space inside the block.

Queshuachaca Bridge, possibly from Quechua or q'iswa - a rope of twisted dried maguey or ichhu. (Chaka bridge, "rope bridge", also spelled Keshwa Chaca, Q'iswa Chaca, Keswachaka, Q'eshwachaka, Qeswachaka, Q'eswachaca, Q'eswachaka, Queshuachaca, Queswachaka).

Consisting of ropes made of grass and spanning the Apurimac River near Huinchiri, in Quehue District, Canas Province, Peru, is the last remaining Inca rope bridge.

Even though there is a modern bridge nearby, the residents of the region keep the ancient tradition and skills alive by renewing the bridge annually, in June. Several family groups have each prepared a number of grass-ropes to be formed into cables at the site, others prepare mats for decking, and the reconstruction is a communal effort. In ancient times the effort would have been a form of tax, with participants coerced to perform the rebuilding; nowadays the builders have indicated that effort is performed to honor their ancestors and the Pachamama (Earth Mother).
