This Common Tern (Sterna hirundo) was touring one of the lakes skimming insects from just above the surface. They are breeding nearby on artificial rafts. Bedfont Lakes, Middlesex, June 2009.

This individual was obviously tired and resting on the berm, barely moving when my car approached. An obvious migrant on his way north.
Another from 2010. At Preston Dock during the second season they had nested on the wave breakers. This one was ringed as a chick at Doffcocker Lodge, Bolton.
This Tern was chased off by Black Headed Gulls who are themselves excellent fliers. However they couldn't match the Terns ability to change direction at an instant. The Gulls gave up after the Tern did a superb roll and dive in to the canal and then seemed to taunt the Gulls by showing off its acrobatic moves.
