Thanks to everyone who takes time to view, fave or comment on my pictures.

Another fascinating bird to observe at this time of the year 👌 The terns can be seen at most nature reserves in our area but my favourite spot is up along the river Hull at Hempholme and up to Brigham . So elegant in flight 😍👍

'AFTER A WASH, THEN THE BRUSH-UP, TERN STYLE.'

One of two juvenile Common Terns that had fledged from the tern raft. Closely attended by both parents, they had made it to the far bank of the lake where, in heatwave conditions they loafed about panting, bathed and preened. It was a treat to be so close to the confiding family.

This one had dried out after bathing and was captured repeatedly rubbing the side of its head across its wing. Tern equivalent to having a 'brush-up' maybe!

I was very fortunate to come across this lovely little common tern in one of the docks in London no less!

Sterna hirundo

Common Tern

Salina di Comacchio

Spotted during a boat trip from Ely to Cambridge today. Shortly afterwards I lost my lens hood overboard, but that is a different story.

It isn't clear whether the one on the wire is a chick being fed, or a female being wooed.

Cette sterne s'affaire à se nourrir en fin de journée. Elle plonge quelques centimètres sous l'eau pour y capturer de petits poissons .

This tern is busy feeding at the end of the day. She dives a few inches underwater to catch small fish.

Taken at Cropston Reservoir, Leicestershire.

Sitting on the railing on the bridge to the pumping station.

These are birds that nest in the area, soon the will joined by passing migrants in increasing numbers occasionally with rarer species.

Sterna hirundo

Chroicocephalus ridibundus

Pretty sure this is a Common Tern, not much black on the bill tip, but the wings are right for Common. Doffcocker Lodge, Bolton, Lancs 14/05/12

Last year the local Common Terns got ousted from their usual (tern) nesting raft by gulls and a resilient Muscovy Duck. However, one pair made do with a small dilapidated duck platform, laying three eggs on a bed of guano. Their exposed nest attracted the attention of corvids, plus various ducks/geese persisted in perching on the platform to preen.

So, life wasn't easy for the terns. Before long I noticed a broken egg near a sitting adult and assumed a crow was the culprit. The egg sac with embryo intact was left though, so I couldn't be sure. It's possible the egg had been trampled by visiting waterfowl I suppose.

This shot was made after the two remaining eggs had hatched. The female was incubating her youngest chick, whilst the eldest went walkabout.

Common Tern, Warnham LNR

This is a bit soft but I quite like it that way as it seems to suit the ambience of the image. The subject not being stand-out sharp seems to work for me, but then I would say that.........

Sterna hirundo. One of a flock of eight, so possibly spring migrants. It's quite widespread if slightly scarce as a breeding bird in the East Riding of Yorkhsire. There are often just one or two pairs at a site. Typical sites are flooded disused quarries where they frequently nest on artificial rafts.

Spain; Murcia, Los Alcazares 7/9/21. Often I've noted a very fine white tip to the bill on ad-winters... I guess it's just where the dark pigment runs out. With Little Terns.
