To support its commitment to going green, Moran Logistics has placed an order with Keltruck for 15 Scania compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles, with delivery throughout 2023. This adds to Moran’s first order of two CNG vehicles from Keltruck, which went on the road in 2021.

Moran decided to purchase CNG vehicles for its Lidl contracts, as Lidl is encouraging its hauliers to use more environmentally-friendly fuel alternatives. The vehicles were initially purchased as a trial, but due to excellent driver feedback Moran has now placed this new larger order. Due to their specialist requirements, Moran has trusted Keltruck to maintain both gas vehicles at its Willenhall location, on a Scania three-year Repair & Maintenance package.

“The CNG vehicles are suited to the work we do with Lidl, based on the products we deliver, and the fuel infrastructure for filling up near Lidl locations is not an issue,” said Dean Roberts, General Manager at Moran Logistics.

“We have a long-standing relationship with Scania, but still underwent a selection process to ensure we partnered with who we saw as the most suitable for our needs whilst supporting us to meet our sustainability target,” said Dean. “This was supported by listening to recommendations from Lidl, as to how CNG fits in with both their roadmap and ours for using renewable energy.”

The CNG vehicles are solely used for refrigerated transport and have Ecogen fridges supplied by Hultsteins, a Swedish and British manufacturer specialising in diesel-free transport refrigeration.

Ecogen is a truck-powered hydraulic generator powered via the engine drive PTO. When combined with a traditional transport refrigeration unit, the system becomes a clean (hybrid), electric-powered refrigeration unit.

“More customers are looking for their logistics partners to demonstrate that they are taking responsibility for the elements under their control within the supply chain,” said Dean. “At Moran Logistics we are committed to look for efficiencies throughout our entire operation, to help reduce our carbon footprint, whilst maintaining the highest delivery standards. Efficient, renewable energy vehicles support this green policy.”

Keltruck Account Manager Calum Crooks, who took the order for these vehicles, commented: "Scania offers the widest range of alternatively-fuelled vehicles on the market today, and I had the pleasure of working with Moran Logistics to help provide this environmentally-friendly fuel alternative for their business."

The two gas vehicles – Scania G cabs, normal roof (G20N), 13l 410bhp, 4x2 CNG vehicles – are part of a range of vehicles and developments from Scania that are driving the shift to a sustainable transport system. Moran has also invested in driver comforts, including a leather steering wheel, premium driver seat, and premium seven-inch radio.

“The gas truck is much quieter compared to a diesel truck, the ride is smoother and more comfortable from a driver’s point of view, and there is an extra bonus that the interior looks nicer and is easy to handle and drive,” said Maxine Maltby, Operations Manager at Moran Logistics. “One of our drivers who has previously driven a LNG truck also mentioned that refuelling is easier with the CNG vehicle, as the process is straightforward and quick.”

Established in 2006, Moran Logistics is an expert in multi-temperature controlled transport and warehousing, handling 16,000 deliveries per week. Its operating philosophy is founded on maintaining the highest level of quality service in the most efficient and cost-effective manner possible. See moranlogistics.co.uk.

This would have been around 1992 or '93, I think, a year or two after I graduated high school.

I believe that this was taken at a surprise birthday party for Royce and I.

I had a DJ'ing gig lined up that evening, but when Rod called and told me that he and his girlfriend Diedre had just gotten into a big fight, I agreed to go driving with him so that he could talk. He picked me up and we drove...and drove...and drove. The closer it got to when I was supposed to be at the party I was going to be DJ'ing at, the more annoyed I got when Rod refused to turn around. Eventually we arrived out at Mirror Lake and found the surprise party. At that point I felt a little guilty about being pissed...but at the same time, I'd had another prior commitment.

We were a good hour outside of Anchorage at this point, though, and there'd be no way for me to make it back to the gig in time. Rod drove me to the closest pay phone so I could call, explain, and make my apologies, then we came back and enjoyed the birthday party.

DINNER AND PROGRAM: CREATIVITY AND EDUCATION

Chinese education has traditionally measured student success through standardized test scores and students’ abilities to “play by the rules.” However, the innovation economy is driven by creativity and disruption. Led by author and journalist Lenora Chu, this panel will explore how China’s education system must both adapt to cultivate future entrepreneurs and retain its commitment to intellectual rigor to ensure that it can serve as a global talent pipeline.

"At the culmination and also at the beginning of my commitment to God, Our Lady was present. I think for a lot of religious, she is the example and the protector of our 'yes', because Our Lady gave her fiat to God and gave her yes to God. In a certain way, I think she looks on us and we look to her in the same way, that she protects our yes that we've given to God, and continues to guide us. I really see her as my mother and also my sister, that brings us to the fullness of our vocation."

Six Limerick volunteers took 3rd prize last week at the coveted First Aid Convention in Europe (FACE) competitions, which took place in Italy. Niall Dunworth, Zoe Gogarty, Gerard O’Connor, Ann O’Mara, Kyna Regan and Orlaith Shinners, all members of the Irish Red Cross Limerick Area, represented Ireland at the first aid competitions, having won the 2010 President’s Trophy.

Donal Forde, Secretary General of the Irish Red Cross, congratulated the team saying “This is the 4th year in a row that Ireland has won a top prize in these competitions, this shows the wealth of quality that Ireland has – not just in volunteers but particularly in volunteers that are highly trained and highly dedicated.”

The First Aid Convention in Europe (FACE) is an annual event that brings together Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers from throughout Europe. It promotes excellence in ‘human behaviour’ and competing teams demonstrate their competence in dealing with casualties in a caring, empathetic and professional way.

Forde went on to say “The six volunteers from Limerick are a credit to the Irish Red Cross and to their communities. Their professionalism and commitment to first aid and life saving is commendable.”

The event showcases the very best skills in Europe. Every year over three million people in Europe are trained in First Aid by Red Cross and Red Crescent societies and this event highlights the level of expertise available across Europe. Each team competing at FACE tackles a series of staged scenarios, all with mass casualties. Actors portray the casualties and the make-up is of theatrical standard and extremely realistic. Each casualty has a judge marking the response of the first aid team.

Irish Red Cross Volunteers, around the country, train weekly to ensure that their lifesaving skills are top quality. The organisation also offers a range of first aid courses for members of the public and businesses. For more information on training courses in your areas see

see our training information pages.

While walking to "Music in the Park" to try to capture an image for the Chaffee art Gallery photo contest I spotted the Rutland Fire Dept taking a little rest between fires.

I never made it to the park. This was a rare capture.
