c1910 postcard view of East Commerce Street in Dunkirk, Indiana. The photographer was between Franklin and Main Streets and looking southeast toward the Main Street intersection. A few buildings and businesses are identifiable in this scene.
For example, the top of the building on the east corner displayed the year 1898 and the name HAGRETT or something similar. The building is still standing today, but the top of the façade has been remodeled and the year and name removed. The awning at the left edge of the postcard had ______ DRUG CO. printed on it. The 1909 and 1915 Sanborn™ fire insurance map sets for Dunkirk show a drugstore at that location. The 1900 map set shows a saloon in that space and another on that corner. A saloon was still located on that corner when the 1909 map set was being prepared, but a grocery and meat market had replaced that saloon by 1915. A 1907 Jay County directory¹ listed two saloons at the corner of Main and Commerce Streets. The second of these was probably the one in the Taft Hotel on the south corner of that intersection. Two more saloons were listed on North Main Street, probably including the one mentioned above. The city didn’t have a street addressing system at the time. So, identifying which is which is not possible with this limited information. According to the directory, Robert Henshaw and Shatto & McGee were proprietors of the two saloons on the corners. Martin Bantz and Morin Heavland owned the two saloons on North Main Street.
Farther east on the south side of Commerce Street a sign advertised BALES LIVERY. A 1907 directory included an advertisement for a J. H. Mull & son livery business. That business was half a block east of the Main Street intersection. The ad included the statement, "Also, Successors to Bales & Co., undertakers." The 1909 map set shows a livery business on the east side of the alley in that block. That building didn’t exist when the 1900 map set was being prepared and the 1915 map set shows an agricultural implements business at that location.
A partially visible sign on the side of the building near the right edge of the postcard appears to read ____ LAKE HARD____. The 1900 map set shows the Taft Hotel in that building with retail space on the first floor. The hotel office was at the east end of the building. The 1907 directory listed Ed Hoover’s hardware store at the corner of Main and Commerce Streets, and the 1909 map set includes a note saying the building (or at least part of it) was being remodeled for the “Hardw. Supply Co.” The 1915 map set does show a hardware business occupying much of that building.
The wood frame building at the right edge of this scene was on the west corner of the intersection. A millinery business had been in that space when the 1900 map set was being prepared, but the 1910 and 1915 map sets show a drugstore. The 1907 directory listed one druggist, Mrs. M. Waltman, on a corner at this intersection. A 1905 directory of druggists² listed Murray Waltman as a druggist in Dunkirk. A 1908 directory³ listed Caroline L. Waltman rather than Murray. In this scene, construction was underway on the Main Street side of the building. The 1909 and 1915 map sets show a structure extending out over the sidewalk at that corner.

...and nothing else.
Sad but true, Christmas today has nothing to do with love and first of all with religious faith. That's why we don't want to celebrate a typical Christmas this year. No overpriced presents, no decoration, but our annual Family-Christmas dinner on Dec. 25. will take place, as every year.
Just out of curiosity, we had asked ten people: "What do we celebrate on Christmas?". Nine answered "er..... we give presents to our loved ones". At least one person could say "umm.... something about Jesus?".
As every year, they will show us lots of gunfights, horror movies and other violence on Christmas TV programmes. There are only a few lovely Christmas movies. We will boycott that and bought some nice DVDs. There are 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory', 'The Polar Express' and my personal favorite 'Little Lord Fauntleroy' :)
Anyway, we wish you a wonderful lovely merry Christmas!

Lights illuminating a loading/unloading area in a Milwaukee industrial area. Strangely enough, there are certain areas in Milwaukee (besides the casino and convenience stores) that work 24x7.. it seems these rail yards and other commerce areas are constantly moving..
Tucked away in the less exclusive areas, they never seem to disappoint as far as unique and interesting subject matter.
I wasn't going to take this photo until the wind started to pick up and the clouds of snow were blowing in front of those giant lights.. it was amazing and COLD at the same time.
