Belgian airborne units are on alert, with 3 Parachute Battalion from Tielen and 2 Commandos from Flawinne, are about to help Belgian expatriates in the context of Exercise Active Trip.
Led by the Immediate Reaction Capability (IRC - Para-Commando Regiment), this exercise will also see the participation of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs. The recent security crisis born of the earthquake in Haiti has highlighted the importance of coordination between the FPS Foreign Affairs and Defense during such a crisis. To gain experience in the field, a team composed of staff from both departments will participate actively in the consolidation of expatriates (about 450 civilians), reception and sorting of these before their evacuation by road or by air on board four C-130 Defence Belgian and a French C-160.

This folding Ensign Commando belonged to my Grandfather, who passed it on to my Father, who passed it on to me. It was used to take some of the early photos of Moi!
It has folding barn doors inside which can close the 6x6 format down to 4.5x6 in a portrait format. The rangefinder window can be adjusted to the smaller format by sliding a masking frame in front, using a sliding knob. For a medium format camera, it is surprisingly compact, and produces some pleasingly crisp images. As the closest focussing distance is about 5ft, it has it's limitations, but below that distance parallax would become an increasingly significant consideration.

The sun is already setting on the right, giving a nice glow to this amazing monument near Spean Bridge (on the A82 towards Fort William) remembering the sacrifices of the British Commando's near their training grounds.
Sadly there are also quite a few graves of Commando's that died in Iraq.
My very first customs I made these about 4 years ago so don't judge.

Based on the Range Rover, the Commando was mainly used by emergency services. It's quite cool, actually. I picked this rather battered example up in Palmerston for $1! I didn't care what condition it was in; I had been looking for one of these ever since I saw one used as a prop in an I Spy book when I was little. I'd like to think this is racing off to some emergency in snowed-under rural Britain!
