The Commando Memorial is a Category A listed monument in Scotland, dedicated to the men of the original British Commando Forces raised during World War II. Situated around a mile from Spean Bridge village, it overlooks the training areas of the Commando Training Depot established in 1942 at Achnacarry Castle. Unveiled in 1952 by the Queen Mother, it has become one of the United Kingdom's best-known monuments, both as a war memorial and as a tourist attraction offering views of Ben Nevis and Aonach Mòr.

Well, guess that's a wrap for 2018! Happy new year y'all, and thanks a lot for staying with me, even though I haven't been active recently. Hopefully I can figure something out (I got some more customs to work on).

I'm not sure many understand the significance of the Commando memorial at Spean Bridge. "Commandos" was not even a British concept. But the origins of what would become the British Commandos, the Royal Marines lie within these lands.

During the Boer War in South Africa, the British Empire was fighting Dutch colonialists, an irregular army of Boers largely made up of Dutch farmers. The Boers developed a tactic to ride on horseback into British camps at night, shoot everyone up and disappear into the night as fast as they arrived. The Dutch called these units, "Kommandos". The British decided to form a force to counter them and formed The Lovat Scouts. This was largely recruited from the Highlanders on the Scottish Estates, tough, hardy men who could shoot well and were used to living and toiling in a harsh landscape. Many were deer stalkers and ghillies, expert marksmen, highly competent in reading the land, moving stealthily, camouflage artists and efficient killers. Gradually the Lovat Scouts were merged into other regiments and lost their identify in the lull between the First and Second World wars. When the British Expeditionary force was defeated in France and retreated from Dunkirk, it was Winston Churchill who ordered that a new force should be formed to go and raid Nazi forces in mainland Europe. The new troops would be called Commandos. And to train them they sent them to training camps in the Highlands of Scotland to train in the same harsh landscapes the Lovat Scouts originally came from.

And so many shooting lodges in Lochaber were requisitioned for Commando training. With a sparce population many areas permitted live firing, so that there are houses not far from where I live that have bullet holes in them, and bullet cases can easily be found in some areas.. Achnacarry was the first training centre, the reason why the Commando memorial is where it is, not far away. SOE (Special Operations Executive) and spies were also trained in this same region.

Occasionally it has crossed my mind: I wonder if they still use our area for the training of spies and special forces without informing the local population, but I've never come across any commandos hiding under a bracken bivouac, so far.

Not really much to talk about for this guy since since his decals are essentially a recolored version of Boss, which is a custom I posted a while back.

As mentioned, lots more on the way! If you haven't already, check out my instagram @avxtc_designs for more frequent WIP updates to see some of the things in the works. So as always, expect more, and I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Heading north to the hills for a weekend the light started to change, so when we passed Spean Bridge it was a no brainer when we decided to stop at the Commando Memorial.

This sculpture was erected in 1951 as a memorial to the WW11 commandos who had trained nearby. As can be seen it holds a superb location overlooking a fabulous corner of Lochaber. Out of view to the left is the Ben Nevis range, however with the sun setting to the west and this profile of the memorial I chose this view instead.

Whatever time of the day and regardless of the prevailing weather The Commando Monument just above Spean Bridge offers rewarding photographic opportunities.

At long last, I have finally made Gregor in his digital camo armor. It took me a total of around 13 hours to make him, starting at around 5:00 PM yesterday with designing and I stayed up till 6:30 AM finishing application and sealing. A lot of work went into this fig, and I must say, I'm proud of the outcome.

The helmet bothers me though, something's a little off about it. Maybe it's the poor photography, I apologize for that :P My brain's not working too well after staying up so long. Aside from that, I think the design for the rest of Gregor is great! The digicam covers almost every surface of the fig except for the very top of the helmet and the top of the torso. This is the most detailed fig I have designed as of yet, and it took quite a long time.

Application was really difficult. That said and what with the amount of detail in this custom, should any of you be interested in it, it will cost more than my normal $20-$25 price range; this will be priced at $31 because of all the work that has to be put into it. That's a lot more than I usually charge, but that's how hard it was for me to make this fig. Do keep in mind how many decals cover this fig.

So anyways, I wanna know what you think! Too much camo? Not enough? Let me know what you think about this custom! If you fave, please drop a comment too. View on all sizes for up close detail!

Now don't get me wrong I like the Command, BUT in Yellow!

Mind you the other guy's shirt takes some beating.

In my opinion a Commando should be black with gold pin striping.

Hey everyone! Better late than never, but here is a small build I made to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Star Wars The Old Republic! As a day 1 player of the game I felt like I just had to build something for this event :D It felt good building a simple 20 x 20 MOC again! I hope you all enjoy the MOC and happy holidays!

I was working in Fort William on Friday and had time to spare on the journey down so stopped to be a tourist for a couple of minutes.

I should have gone over to check, but looking at this image I cannot imagine why the seat is pointing in the direction it does; answers on a postcard please.

It was a grey old day so I thought a B&W conversion might work?

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

We will remember them.

EXERCISE GREEN DAGGER 19.1

Pictured: Army Commandos and Royal Marines in support of a company level advance to contact exercise.

As part of their Force Generation process and wider preparation for Lead Commando Group, 45 Commando Royal Marines deployed to America during Exercise Green Dagger. The exercise involved Live Fire Tactical Training (LFTT) and a Force of Force (FEX) exercise with two United States Marine Corps (USMC) Battle Groups (BG), conducted on an impressively large village complex. During the exercise 45 Cdo were stationed at Camp Wilson, located on the Marine Air Ground Combat Centre, a huge training complex of approx 100 square kilometres in the Mojave Desert. It was a great opportunity for the Commandos to meet and train with their American counterparts.

What a spectacular figure. My only complaint is that his impressive arsenal should have also included a shotgun and uzi.

Day 148 - Winter Commando -

This was more of a concept figure than anything else, but I wanted to play with hand-painting a digital-camo scheme. While this turned out alright, I've got another figure that uses this technique and looks even better!

Norwegen / Nordland / Lofoten / Moskenesøya - Bei der Munkebu

Moskenesøya (lit. 'Moskenes Island') is an island at the southern end of the Lofoten archipelago in Nordland county, Norway. The 186-square-kilometre (72 sq mi) island is shared between Moskenes Municipality and Flakstad Municipality. The tidal whirlpool system known as Moskstraumen, one of the strongest in the world, is located between Moskenesøya's Lofoten Point and the island of Mosken.

Geography

The island consists of an agglomeration of glaciated hills with the highest peak being the 1,029-metre-tall (3,376 ft) Hermannsdalstinden mountain. It is elongated from southwest to northeast and it is about 40 kilometres (25 mi) long and 10 km (6 mi) wide. It also has a very uneven shoreline. The island is connected to the nearby island of Flakstadøya by the Kåkern Bridge which is part of the European route E10 which ends on the Moskenesøya island at the village of Å.

Population

There are many villages on the island. Flakstad Municipality, on the northern part of the island, has several small villages including Fredvang, Selfjord, and Krystad. Moskenes Municipality, on the southern part of the island, has the villages of Å, Hamnøya, Moskenes, Reine, Sakrisøy, Sørvågen, and Tind, all located on the eastern side of the island. There were settlements on the western coast, but the last ones were abandoned in 1950s owing to severe storms.

Attractions

Most villages are frequently visited by tourists and have designed small exhibits of local peculiarities. So Sakrisøy has a museum of 2,500 dolls from all over Europe. Sørvågen contains a local department of Norsk Telemuseum (Norwegian Telecom Museum) which reflects the local history of telegraphy. In 1861, the island became part of the 170-kilometre-long (110 mi) Lofoten telegraph line with a station in Sørvågen (which became the Sørvågen museum in 1914), and in 1867 the line was connected with Europe. In 1906, a wireless telegraph system was installed in Sørvågen – the second in Europe after Italy – connecting Sørvågen with Røst island.

The village of Å is a traditional fishing place and nearly its entire territory is the 150 years old Norwegian Fishing Village Museum, which includes the Lofoten Stockfish Museum, a forge, a bakery, and a cod liver oil factory.

History

In the beginning of World War II, the island was occupied by the German Army. In December 1941, it was the venue of the Operation Anklet – a British Commando raid carried out by 300 men from No. 12 Commando and the Norwegian Independent Company 1. The landing party was supported by 22 ships from three navies – British, Norwegian and Polish. As a result, two German radio transmitters were destroyed and several small boats were captured or sunk. Importantly an operational Enigma coding machine was obtained from one of the sunken German patrol ships. Also, about 200 local Norwegians volunteered to serve in the Free Norwegian Forces.
