Comic Con is here. I took this and processed it during last years festivities but never posted it. This year I finally decided to pay for a badge, so I'll be spending some time roaming around inside the convention, in addition to checking out all the activities happening outside. It should be an eventful weekend.

I was asked by Untold Method to contribute to their ongoing collaborative comic/graphic novel. This is the 5th page of the comic, and I was given all the dialogue and guidelines for the story. I did it using my typical technique of India ink on paper. This is pretty much my first attempt at working on a comic, but hopefully not my last. We'll see.......

Comic Relief's symbol may be a funny red nose and provide us with a giggle at fundraising events throughout the week and night of hilarious tv at the end of it, but it's not really about the comedy.
As I sit and pose for this 365 shot I am listening to the story of a woman who had suffered domestic abuse from her husband. He cut off all the phone lines in their house and beat her with a belt for a remark to his sister which the rest of us wouldn't bat an eyelid at. Then he picked up a wine bottle and threatened to continue the abuse on her son.
The woman had hidden a fake mobile phone in her house converted so that any button you push goes directly to 999. She managed to activate this and communicate secretly with emergency services while the husband beat her and her son, an act which probably saved the boy's life. It costs £50 to convert a phone and save somebody's life.
If you are anywhere looking at this and the red nose photographs above give you a chuckle or make you sad, or if you have any empathy with families like these...
... or the HIV positive African woman raising 13 starving children - 4 HIV positive - 10 of which were her sisters' who had both died of AIDS...
... or the sweet 11 year old girl caring for both of her disabled parents who had the oldest head on her shoulders but lit up with happiness at a £15 day out...
... or the woman whose three year old girl died of malaria on the way to the hospital after walking for days with her to reach the medical centre for the want of drugs costing 40p...
