Medieval Gothic corridors and architectural accessories in the Dominican monastery at Ptuj, Slovenia.

In 1230, after obtaining the approval of the Archbishop of Salzburg the widow of Friedrich III of Ptuj, Mehtildis, donated land on the western edge of Ptuj to the Dominican Order. The first construction period got underway following the arrival of monks from Friesach (Carinthia), who built a two-storey monastery with cloisters in the south and more prominent east wings. However, in 1302 the monastery burnt down and its renovation lasted until the mid-14th century. During this period the west part of the cloister was built and its east wall painted. Reconstruction and renovation works went on into the 15th and 16th centuries. During the 17th century various Baroque modifications were made, and in the early-18th century the east part of the church façade, facing the town, was covered with rich stucco work and adorned with statues. The monastery refectory was equally influenced with Baroque elements, and its vault was covered with stucco works and paintings.

The principal activities of the Dominicans in Ptuj were preaching, pastoral care, economic operations and education. They also had a rich library and archive. The monks inhabited the monastery until 1785 when it was dissolved under the reforms of Joseph II.

This is the way I photographed these columns at Mission Santa Barbara. I thought it was cool that they looked like they were drawn with pastels. I sure as heck wouldn't have been able to draw this.

Delos is a small strip of land near Mykonos, but don't let its small size fool you since this island is one of Greece's most important archaeological, historical and mythological sites. The entire island is an excavation site, one of the largest ones in the Mediterranean, and it's a fantastic experience to walk among the ruins and see how the ancient Greeks used to live.

Delos gets even more attractive in a mythological sense since the island is the birthplace of the twin gods: Artemis and Apollo. Due to that, Delos was considered to many as a holy sanctuary island. Because of this glorious past and everything that comes with it, UNESCO declared Delos a part of the World Heritage List back in 1990.

We visited the island on a sunny day in the summer of 2021 while onboard Running on Waves. While we researched the islands and places we would visit during our cruise, we learned about Delos, and we were genuinely excited to see it.

The Astoria Column in Oregon is in a wooded park atop Astoria's highest hill, It presents a spectacular view of the historic city and its surrounding rivers, bay, forest, mountains, and ocean. The Column, built in 1926, is 125 feet high and has 164 steps winding to the top.The column presents a fascinating illustration of the discovery of the Columbia River by Captain Robert Gray in 1792, the establishment of American claims to the Northwest Territory, the winning of the West and the arrival of the Great Northern Railway.
