Se conoce como Santuario de San Pedro de Alcántara al último convento que erigió el santo extremeño; fue en un sitio apartado del término arenense en el que había una ermita dedicada a San Andrés del Monte, junto a la cual, fray Pedro de Alcántara mandó edificar un pequeño convento para que los frailes se dedicasen a la contemplación y a la vida de penitencia dentro de la línea de ascetismo que él propugnaba entre los miembros de su Orden.
La pronta muerte del fundador, que ocurrió en la Enfermería que entonces existía en Arenas -hoy residencia de ancianos- cambió el destino que el fraile extremeño había trazado para este convento y lo convirtió en centro de devoción, no sólo de los naturales del Valle del Tiétar, sino de personas de muy distinta clase social que acudían de los lugares más apartados de España.

I spotted this tower thingy as we drove across the bridge and proclaimed "That's where I want to go" and after many wrong turns which resulted in discovering more treasure we finally found this, which of course, I never knew existed :)
A Mirror Image (in a plane mirror) is a reflected duplication of an object that appears almost identical, but is reversed in the direction perpendicular to the mirror surface. As an optical effect it results from reflection off from substances such as a mirror or water. It is also a concept in geometry and can be used as a conceptualization process for 3-D structures. Two-dimensional mirror images can be seen in the reflections of mirrors or other reflecting surfaces, or on a printed surface seen inside-out. If we first look at an object that is effectively two-dimensional (such as the writing on a card) and then turn the card to face a mirror, the object turns through an angle of 180° and we see a left-right reversal in the mirror. In this example, it is the change in orientation rather than the mirror itself that causes the observed reversal. Another example is when we stand with our backs to the mirror and face an object that's in front of the mirror. Then we compare the object with its reflection by turning ourselves 180°, towards the mirror. Again we perceive a left-right reversal due to a change in our orientation. So, in these examples the mirror does not actually cause the observed reversals.
In den Jahren 1145 bis 1159 erfolgte die Umgestaltung des Westwerkes mit dem oberen Querriegel unter Abt Wibald von Stablo. Dazu zählten die Abtragung des zentralen mittleren Turms sowie die Aufstockung der beiden Fassadentürme. Zwischen 1585 und 1616 erfolgte ein zweiter großer Umbau unter Abt Theodor von Beringhausen. Arbeiten und Renovierungen an den Turmgiebeln und Turmhelmen wurden vorgenommen.

Nach dem Tod Wibalds verlor Corvey rasch seine frühere Rolle im Reich und in der römischen Kurie. Eine politische Bedeutung hatte das Kloster nochmals zur Zeit von Abt Widukind (1189–1203). A
ber die folgenden Äbte und ein Klosterbrand 1242 trugen zur Verschuldung und zum wirtschaftlichen Niedergang bei.
Die Beziehungen zu Rom wurden durch die antirömische Politik der Äbte Dietmar II. von Stockhausen (1206–1216) und Hermann I. von Holte (1223–1254) nachhaltig gestört.
Seit der Mitte des 13. Jahrhunderts mit dem Ende der Stauferzeit konnte Corvey kaum noch eine eigenständige Rolle gegenüber den Erzbischöfen von Köln, die als Herzöge von Westfalen auch materielle Interessen in der Gegend hatten, sowie den Bischöfen von Paderborn und Münster spielen.
Der Dreißigjährige Krieg führte zum endgültigen Ruin der karolingischen Klosterkirche. Mit Ausnahme des Westwerkes wurde die Kirche 1665 abgebrochen.
Der Kirchenneubau erfolgte zwischen 1667 und 1671 durch den Architekten Niklas Dentell.

Neben dem Johannischor ist der hier gezeigte Eingangsbereich das Einzige, was aus der Karolingerzeit geblieben ist und er hält den Eindruck, den man von draußen beim Betrachten gewinnt, im Inneren aufrecht.

Early on in the COVER OF NIGHT series, I shot a couple gas stations. They were not initially the type scene I was looking to capture, but when I came across one late at night, bright and isolated in the darkness, it was impossible for me to resist, so I continue to shoot them.
