Uxmal is an ancient Mayan city of the classical period in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico.
The structures at Uxmal date from about 850 to 1100 AD. It is the most heavily decorated Mayan ruins in the Yucatan.
It had a possible population of about 15,000 people.
We visited Uxmal on a shore excursion from Progreso, Mexico, in February 2014.

Segesta was one of the major cities of the Elymian people, one of the three indigenous peoples of Sicily. On a hill just outside the ancient city is an unusually well preserved Doric temple built sometime in the late 5th century BC.
Interesting to compare with the figures from the Marcus Aurelius Column. Had the designer of the Tapestry been to Rome and seen it? (Hic domus incenditur: here a house is set on fire) - William devastated the area around Hastings in order (succesfully) to goad Harold into moving south from London too soon. Not something a conqueror would be inclined to boast about but something a subversive Anglo-Saxon monk might slip in. Bernstein argues that the tapestry contains several oblique allusions to the Babylonian captivity.

Yet another example of the incredible attention to detail with which the old builders of yore did their jobs.
This Column was part of the Roman Basilica in York. The column is 31 feet in height. It was erected in 100ad. The Basilica was a substantial building some 72 meters long and as high as the Nave in York Minster. It is likely that the Emperor Constantine was proclaimed Emperor of Rome in the Basilica in 306ad.
The Greco-Roman city of Jerash (ancient Gerasa) is one of the most important and best preserved Classical sites in the Near East. The city's major buildings and monuments are in good condition and the huge extent of the site is impressive. Restoration and reconstruction of important elements has continued throughout the 20th century and today the ancient ruined city sits immediately alongside the thriving modern town of Jerash.
The sprawling site is dominated by it's more significant remains, which include the seemingly numerous columns of the main colonnaded street and oval forum, along with two fine amphitheatres, several temples and imposing triumphal arches.

Went to the International Peace Gardens in Salt Lake city today, had a fun time playing about with the flora and fauna.
I wanted to play about with just my shiny silver 17mm which I got for dirt cheap from a guy who took a massive loss just to have a black copy. :P

The National Palace is located in the mountain of Montjuic in Barcelona. It is a palace built between 1926 and 1929 for the 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona and since 1934 houses the National Art Museum of Catalonia.
It was the main exhibition building, for the exposition, and it was designed by architects Enric Eugenio Catà Cendoya and under the supervision of Pere Domenech i Roura, once the initial draft of Josep Puig i Cadafalch Guillem Busquets was rejected and has an area of 32,000 m2. Made in the Classical style it is inspired by the Spanish Renaissance, it is rectangular in shape with two sides and a square back with a large elliptical dome in the middle. Waterfalls and fountains on the steps of the palace were the work of Carles Buïgas and nine large projectors were placed on the roof, which still today emit strong light rays that can be seen from all over the city. The ceremony of inauguration of the exhibition was held in the Oval Office and was chaired by Alfonso XIII and Queen Victoria Eugenia.
At the National Palace for the world exposition there was an exhibition devoted to "Art in Spain" with more than 5,000 works from all over the country. In the nineteenth-century style interior decoration involved several artists and sculptors, out of which some were Enric Casanovas, Josep Dunyach, Frederic Marès and Josep Llimona, and painters Francesc d'Assis Galí, Josep de Togores, Manuel Humbert, Josep Obiols, Joan Colom Francesc Labarta.
Between 1996 and 2004 the palace was remodeled by Dalmau Augusto Cam, Game Aulenti, Enric Steegmann, Josep Benedito and Agustí Obiol in order to create spaces to display and store all the works of the collection.

Unlike most lighting columns, the shaft of this one does not narrow down as the height increases. It's difficult to conceive how the head/globe would have attached to the structure and the small ventilation holes at the top, where the metalwork fans out beg the question as to whether or not this column had some other function. Perhaps as an air vent for some room in the basement of the hotel (or, as it was, sailors home)? There are other examples of lighting columns doubling up in function to provide ventilation for public conveniences, including one on South St David Street in Edinburgh and another in Musselburgh. Old Testament characters, including at the centre the figures popularly identified as Solomon & the Queen of Sheba; Detail from the 'Royal Portal', consisting of three fine sculpted doorways dating from the 1140s on the west facade of Chartres cathedral. This facade was the only part of the cathedral to escape destruction by fire in 1194, the remainder of the building was rebuilt following this catastrophe in a uniform early gothic.
