Dar El Bacha Musée Des Confluences

Dar El Bacha was the home of Pacha Thami El Glaoui, also known as the Lord of the Atlas, who ruled over Marrakesh from 1912 to 1956. It is a majestic palace considered to be archetype of Moroccan architecture that illustrates both local craft and European inspired decoration - it also has built in water pipes and central heating!

After the Duke's death in 1852, in common with other cities, Liverpool decided to erect a monument to celebrate his achievements.

The Basilica Cistern is a giant ancient cistern under the city of Istanbul, close to the Hagia Sophia. It was built in the 6th century and has the capacity to store 100000 tons of water. The ceiling is supported by 336 marble columns, each 9 metres (30 ft) high, spread out over 10000 square meters. Due to a combination of a dodgy, borrowed tripod and difficulty to position it I am not totally happy with the composition, but it should still give you an idea of the place.

The bronze soldier, facing south as all such statues do, is Jacksonville’s oldest and tallest statue and one of the few pieces of the city that survived the Great Fire of 1901.

The monument rises 62 feet from a square foundation. A column, extends up from the base (both made of Vermont granite), and is topped by the bronze figure of a Confederate soldier in winter uniform. He stands at ease, with hands clasping the barrel of his rifle that rests on the ground, and on his cap are the initials, “J.L.I.”, representing the Jacksonville Light Infantry.

Bronze plaques, with images of Southern heroes sculpted in relief, are mounted on three sides of the base: A bust of Confederate General Kirby Smith on the north; a scene of Generals Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson with their drum corps on the west; and a bust of General J.J. Dickinson, commander of the UCV’s Florida Division on the south.

On the east side of the base is a plaque with the following inscription, most likely written by Charles Hemming:

TO THE SOLDIERS OF FLORIDA

This shaft is by a comrade raised in testimony of his love, recalling deeds immortal, heroism unsurpassed.

With ranks unbroken, ragged, starved and decimated, the Southern soldier for duty’s sake, undaunted, stood to the front of the battle until no light remained to illumine the field of carnage, save the luster of his chivalry and courage.

Nor shall your glory be forgot,

While fame her record keeps,

Or honor points the hallowed spot,

Where valor proudly sleeps.

The Alcázar of Seville is one of the most representative monumental compounds in the city, the country and the Mediterranean culture as a whole. The historical evolution of the city in the last millennium is held within its walls and gardens, amalgamating influences starting from the Arabic period, late Middle Ages Mudéjar right through to the Renaissance, Baroque and the XIX century. The declaration of World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1987 acknowledged the survival of cultures and civilizations as a harmonic whole where all of the elements are balanced. The visitor will get to know these unique surroundings either through the legendary al-Mutamid, the XI century monarch and poet from Seville, or through some of the characters that illuminated modern-day Spain around 1812. www.alcazarsevilla.org/english-version/

The Polo Forest region of Gujarat is a quiet retreat, nestled in the Aravalli hills bordering Gujarat and Rajasthan. The word "Polo" is derived from "Pol" which means "gateway" in Sanskrit. The forest was a gateway between Gujarat and Rajasthan.

The Polo Forest region played host to the ancient kingdom of Vijayanagar. Polo Forest conceals a number of amazing temples built during the 10th to 15th century A.D.

These bright metal columns once divided vast racks of looms powered by a long drive shaft and mighty engine on one side of Dalton Mills. The noise in here would have been a cacophany of clattering machinery, populated with workers continually tending to the ceaselessly thundering mechanisms producing textiles. I thought this shot would benefit from a sense of human scale so decided to step into the frame and turn it into a quick self portrait.

Had a day off work, and guess where I went ;-)! #alyzenmoonshadow #androidography

On a downtown Calgary building. The architect and builders of this modern building were clearly paying tribute to ancient Greece.

A Roman triumphal column that commemorates Roman emperor Trajan's victory in the Dacian Wars.

Completed in AD 113, the freestanding column is most famous for its spiral bas relief, which artistically describes the epic wars between the Romans and Dacians (101–102 and 105–106).

Standing at about 126 ft high, the column shows 2,662 figures, and 155 scenes

I found this article to be a very interesting read.

These sprites are known as Column Sprites because they resemble your typical columns or cylindrical tubes. Thee types of sprites propagate downward only, unlike other sprites that propagate downward first and then upward.

I enjoy working with texture very much so when I discovered Dyrk Wyst's textures after a comment he made on one of my photos, I wanted to try using one. This image is based on a photo I took during my rainy time in Paris this spring. I enjoyed a photography exhibit at the Grand Palais, the building with the French flag on top. Thanks, Dyrk, for the texture!

The Temple of Bacchus, Lebanon.

"The temple, however, is but a single aspect of the vast complex. Baalbek is unequaled for boldness of concept and skill in utilizing Herculean masonry."
