In 1937, President Franklin D. Roosevelt proclaimed Columbus Day a national holiday, largely as a result of intense lobbying by the Knights of Columbus. It commemorates the landing of Christopher Columbus in the New World on 12th October 1492 and originally it was celebrated on that day but was eventually fixed to the second Monday in October in 1971.
For many, the holiday is a way of both honouring Columbus’ achievements and celebrating Italian-American heritage.
This window of Columbus arriving in the New World is thus from the Italian church in Greenwich Village, known as Our Lady of Pompeii.

Columbus, OH.
Taken from Genoa Park next to COSI. There was nobody around when I took this shot except for some folks fishing on the other side of the bridge. It was 6pm on a Monday. Columbus was deserted. I can't think of any other city I've been in where you could get this view on a gorgeous day around sunset, and still have nobody around. Weird.
