This Sandhill Crane colt comes in to land at Creamer's Field in Fairbanks with its parents (out of frame). This bird was born this year and will accompany its parents for 9-10 months after birth.
Taken 21 August 2021 at Creamer's Field, Fairbanks, Alaska.
It is that time of year again when the little Sandhill babies are hatching everywhere. One little one is just a day old and the other is about twelve hours and they can hardly stand on their little feet. At this point they have not even left the nest for the first time.
The crane parents flew across the canal and the colt tried to follow them. The baby appeared to be struggling so the parents flew back across the canal. The baby was able to climb on lily pads and work its way back to shore.
Thanks so much for the visit!
These two little colts appear very loving in this image but just a few minutes earlier they were fighting each other as this is what they do at this stage as they look on each other as rivals for food.
Departing from the Sonoran Desert, to the Texas Coast for this photo of a young Whooping Crane, also known as a colt.
During our first two trips of 2023, I was privileged to observe and photograph the next generation of two of the most endangered bird species in the world.
First, this approximately eight-month-old (at the time this was taken) Whooping Crane. I'll post the other tomorrow...I'm sure no one can guess what it will be :-).
We are so fortunate to have a pair of Sandhill Crane's raising two colts in the neighborhood and we see them in the yard daily. It is such a thrill to be able to watch the antics of the young ones. And they're growing so fast. Here one leads the way with one of the parents in tow.

ColΘ Citadel (Cetatea ColΘ). The citadel was built in the 14th century by the CΓ’ndea family. Because of the appearance of the citadel and toponymy of the places, it is assumed that these would have inspired the novel "The Castle in the Carpathians" by Jules Verne. The citadel is in a state of increased degradation, being practically a ruin.
Two young Sandhill Crane colts stay close together and follow their parents at the edge of my yard. They're so small it looks like they're in a jungle ;)

Took a walk behind the truckstop this morning. There's a small lake that I wanted to take some reflection shots of. Which I did, but noticed these horses nearby, so walked over that direction a bit and saw the new colt. Wanted to get closer, but apparently they had the "stranger danger", warning and decided to move along.
These two little colts are just a few days old and each one is watching a parent look for food. As soon as the parent finds something they run as fast as their little legs can carry then with wings outstretched for balance, they often lose their balance and fall gently..

Experimenting with Microsoft Copilot. "A still life of a Colt single-action army revolver sitting atop a holster and gunbelt on a desk near a window."
When I get too close he runs back to Mama.
Have a lovely Sunday and Week ahead.
Thank you all for your visit comments and faves!
Much appreciated!
These photos are from June 18 when the colts were 10 and 8 days old. The difference in the size of each colt is quite evident. Hard to believe such a difference between them only being two days apart.
June 14, 2018 Reifel, Delta, BC I understand the colts are both still doing well, hopefully they both make it!

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tussilago farfara, commonly known as coltsfoot,:β770β is a plant in the tribe Senecioneae in the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and parts of western and central Asia. The name "tussilago" is derived from the Latin tussis, meaning cough, and ago, meaning to cast or to act on. It has had uses in traditional medicine, but the discovery of toxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids in the plant has resulted in liver health concerns.
Tussilago farfara is the only accepted species in the genus Tussilago, although more than two dozen other species have at one time or another been considered part of this group. Most of them are now regarded as members of other genera (Chaptalia, Chevreulia, Farfugium, Homogyne, Leibnitzia, Petasites, Senecio).
Folaldafoss, Γsland
When we took the shortcut road across the mountain to EgilsstaΓ°ir in eastern Iceland, we came across this waterfall pouring through a crack in the basalt rock. A few years later I finally learned its name: Folaldafoss or Colt Waterfall.
One of the things I so love about the young colts and filly is their fluffy manes! :) This young colt followed me back to the car ... of course mom was right behind him. Some seem to want to interact with you while others take off the minute you come in sight. :)
