This Sandhill Crane colt comes in to land at Creamer's Field in Fairbanks with its parents (out of frame). This bird was born this year and will accompany its parents for 9-10 months after birth.
Taken 21 August 2021 at Creamer's Field, Fairbanks, Alaska.
Sandhill Crane colts are made to walk, run and swim long distances to stay with the parents when they are only days old. The colts mange to keep up with the parents. I don't know how they do it!

The crane parents flew across the canal and the colt tried to follow them. The baby appeared to be struggling so the parents flew back across the canal. The baby was able to climb on lily pads and work its way back to shore.

These two little colts appear very loving in this image but just a few minutes earlier they were fighting each other as this is what they do at this stage as they look on each other as rivals for food.
Departing from the Sonoran Desert, to the Texas Coast for this photo of a young Whooping Crane, also known as a colt.
During our first two trips of 2023, I was privileged to observe and photograph the next generation of two of the most endangered bird species in the world.
First, this approximately eight-month-old (at the time this was taken) Whooping Crane. I'll post the other tomorrow...I'm sure no one can guess what it will be :-).
Colț Citadel (Cetatea Colț). The citadel was built in the 14th century by the Cândea family. Because of the appearance of the citadel and toponymy of the places, it is assumed that these would have inspired the novel "The Castle in the Carpathians" by Jules Verne. The citadel is in a state of increased degradation, being practically a ruin.

Two young Sandhill Crane colts stay close together and follow their parents at the edge of my yard. They're so small it looks like they're in a jungle ;)
Taken 27 June 2023 near Wasilla, Alaska.
Took a walk behind the truckstop this morning. There's a small lake that I wanted to take some reflection shots of. Which I did, but noticed these horses nearby, so walked over that direction a bit and saw the new colt. Wanted to get closer, but apparently they had the "stranger danger", warning and decided to move along.
When I get too close he runs back to Mama.

Sandhill cranes raise one brood per year. In non-migratory populations, egg-laying can begin as early as December or as late as August. In migratory populations, egg-laying usually begins between early April and late May. Both members of a breeding pair build the nest using plant material from the surrounding areas. Nest sites are usually in marshes, bogs, or swales, though cranes will occasionally nest on dry land.
The female lays 1 to 3 (usually 2) eggs that are oval-shaped and dull brown with reddish brown markings. Both parents participate in incubation, which lasts 29 to 32 (usually 30) days. Incubation begins with the laying of the first egg and continues until the second egg has hatched. The chicks are precocial; they hatch covered in down, with their eyes open and are able to leave the nest within 24 hours of hatching. The parents brood the chicks for up to 3 weeks after hatching. They feed the young intensively for the first few weeks, and with decreasing frequency until they reach independence at 9 or 10 months old.

Gunner, the colt who was orphaned at nine days old is thriving. The surrogate mother they brought in for him, refused him, so he's been hand fed formula, until recently.

Even though he has on a pink harness he is definitely a colt. This is just up the road from me where the big silo barn is that I have captured many times. I really like his cocked up leg on this one.

When we took the shortcut road across the mountain to Egilsstaðir in eastern Iceland, we came across this waterfall pouring through a crack in the basalt rock. A few years later I finally learned its name: Folaldafoss or Colt Waterfall.
"God added a few extra brushstrokes to him!" a comment I loved that a horse follower said.

One of the things I so love about the young colts and filly is their fluffy manes! :) This young colt followed me back to the car ... of course mom was right behind him. Some seem to want to interact with you while others take off the minute you come in sight. :)
