The fate that befell almost all ancient bronzes, melted down in the Middle Ages due to a shortage of raw materials, has spared one group of sculptures kept on the Capitoline since 1471. These are the bronzes donated to the Roman People by Pope Sixtus IV, who ordered their transfer from the Lateran Patriarchate, marking with this act the birth of the Capitoline Museums. Among them are the precious fragments of the head, hand and globe of a colossal statue of Constantine the Great (306-337 CE), the first Christian emperor.

The gilded bronze head (mounted on a modern neck) is surprising both for its size and for the quality of execution with a refined treatment of the metal surfaces. The face, worked in broad planes, has marked features. The large eyes weighed down by bags, the expression lines and the drooping cheeks indicate that we are dealing with an image of the emperor in his mature years, presumably executed soon after his death in 337 CE. The series of holes visible in the hair, treated as a compact cap, is explained by the original presence of a crown, which we know from a medieval source to have been made of gold and adorned with precious gems.

Inspired by my good friend Joe, here is an old shot I took back in 2007.

A humble point & clicker that desperately needed a little help! Processed in PSE9 on my Mac until I liked the result… especially considering the original! Hope you do too - thanks for viewing.

A grand Pre-Raphaelite style painting with intricate details, rendered in stunning 8k resolution. In the center, a colossal troll tenderly presents a delicate pansy on his fingertip to a young boy, capturing a moment of unexpected tenderness in a mythical world. Rich colors, intricate brush strokes, and emotional expressions elevate the scene to a masterful work of art.

I'm not sure what the original purpose of the building was but it is by far the largest clapboard structure I've ever seen. (If anyone knows, I'd be curious to find out). I imagine the light must have been fabulous inside with all those windows.

Marforio, colossal statue of the god Oceanus (second half of I century AD) - Courtyard New Palace - Capitoline Museums Rome

Marforio is a huge marble sculpture from Roman times, dating back to the first century, perhaps depicting the god Neptune, Ocean or the Tiber.

He was one of the six speaking statues in Rome, perhaps the most famous after Pasquino; on the body of these statues there were posted anonymous irreverent satires (" pasquinades") poking fun at public figures of the 14th and 15th centuries of Rome, as an expression of popular discontent with the highest class holding the power and control of the city.

Built for the Colossal Castle Contest XVI

UPDATE: Delighted to say I got the top honourable mention in the category for this build, coming second out of 17 amazing entries.

It was a mild Spring. The Northern ice had started to melt for the first time since anyone could remember, revealing a river that had been frozen for an Age. The young exiled Prince made his way through the gorge, between the mountains, further and further into the North, towards the pole, where he was sure he would discover his true destiny. And then, weeks since he had seen any settlements, an enormous tower could be seen rearing in the distance.

As he drew closer, he noticed the tower overshadowed a tiny collection of buildings. There was no sign of life, and the young Prince realised they were long abandoned. As he circumnavigated the tower he realised that there was no visible method of entry to the tower - perhaps a tunnel? And then, cutting through the stillness, a voice rang out, hideous, cracked, its metallic timbre ringing through the valley, hanging blade-like in the frozen air.

"Rapunzel... Rapunzel... let down your golden hair!"

All Lego! (No Scala dolls harmed in the making of this MOC! She’s completely intact inside the tower!)

My first attempt at a microscale castle build. (I've been working on two separate microscale space ships too, hopefully they'll be done soon). The idea started with the tower, and then I realised I'd need quite a big setting to give it its impact. I decided on the snow pretty early on but had trouble making it look convincingly micro, until I happened upon a combination of new parts - the wedges with 45 degree cut out, the new flowers, and those new curved 1 x 1 tiles. I spend most of my time playing around with old grey, which is a closed system that will never get updated, so it was fun to get to grips with all these new parts. The original plan was to litter the thing with cheese slopes in the typical microscale way, but it just wasn't working for me. I opted instead to leave the rocks rectilinear and "classic" Lego, and the snow would be curved and doing all sorts of fancy stuff. Nevertheless the build is almost exclusively studs up except for a couple of important exceptions (under the tower windows and the church windows) I stayed with quite a narrow colour palette, preferring also old greys when grey was needed, but the placement of colours was quite deliberate to lead the eye, create tension and tell the story. I made sure that the directions were all consistent - the church faces east, the river runs north-south, and the snow is melting faster on the South Westerly rock faces.

It's rare that I like microscale builds because the lack of human figures means they can feel rather lonely and lack an emotional resonance for me. But here I happened upon a subject matter where the loneliness was apt.

Photo taken from Strike Valley Overlook, the same spot as the previous post, but the previous is looking south, while this one looks north. The western side of the Waterpocket Fold lifted 4,000 feet relative to the east side, leaving sedimentary layers pointing into the afternoon sun. The highest point on the horizon is the Golden Throne, also in Capitol Reef National Park.

Hey what a surprise, another HDR pano of about 60 pictures inside of Rome's famous Coliseum. Unfortunately, the day we went there was rainy and overcast. But thats okay, still worked to try another time consuming huge HDR mongorama. Maybe if I had any form of skill, I'd figure out a better way of showing a dull flat scene. But for now, this is it!

Colossal Three Heads Six is the focal point of Joseph L. Alioto Performing Arts Piazza, which is located in the heart of San Francisco’s Civic Center, across from City Hall. Standing over 26 feet tall and weighing almost 15 tons, the copper sculpture is the artist’s largest work to date. Three Heads Six Arms is part of an important series of monumental works depicting Buddha arms, legs, feet, hands and heads that was inspired by the artist’s experience seeing remnants of religious sculptures that had been destroyed during the Cultural Revolution for sale in a Tibetan market. Zhang, who is based in Shanghai, is widely regarded as one of the most influential and provocative contemporary artists working today.
