Thursday Evening, September 4th, 2008
Today is our two year Anniversary. Gorgeous, blissful day. This evening, I get an instant message from our friend who I'll call "Steve."
You see, Steve and his wife have been married one year and a few weeks. My Fiancee was his best man in their wedding. A few months ago, his wife who we'll call "Lisa" delivered their stillborn child. They were devastated.
She's been in and out of the hospital for the last few months and this past week she was told she has colon cancer. When she delivered the baby, something ruptured inside of her that was full of cancerous tumors that are now latched onto her major organs. She has less than six months to live and a three year old daughter.
Steve is subtly distressed in his instant message, so I ask if he would like to talk. We spent over an hour on the phone. We both lost it a few times in between laughter caused by his intake of Long Islands. A tear streak latches on to the left side of my face.
So, on our two year Anniversary, excuse me while I smoke. My friend is dying of colon cancer.
Dr. Parameshwara CM says Screening for Colon Cancer is not a regular practice in India. It is done in the west because Colon Cancer is more prevalent in western countries.
Today in India, It is just the beginning, what US is seeing now, India will see in the next 30 years.
Anybody who has a family history of Colon Cancer, have to be screened for Colon Cancer after 40 years of age.
If they have symptoms like bleeding per rectum, weight loss, alteration in bowel habits like constipation and diarrhea, pain abdomen continuous, sudden acute obstruction of the abdomen, the patient should immediately seek the help of a specialist.

Until our ports can be surgically removed, we need to have them flushed every 4 weeks. We decided to walk to the hospital together, flush our ports, have a tea and do a fitness class before walking home
It was a gorgeous day for a walk and so nice to chat with a friend and fellow survivor.
(I look like a turtle, because I'm stretching to hold the iphone far enough away to include both of us in the photo)
Because of treatments for my colorectal cancer, I've lost close to 20 pounds (9 kg) in the four months since Christmas 2006. Not a recommended weight loss plan, I tell you, but it's better than what happened to me when I developed diabetes 16 years ago.
In both photos, I think the change is most noticeable in my neck. See here for instance.
