Two Canadians, John Robert Connon (1862-1931), and William James Johnston (1856–1941), contributed to the development of the panoramic camera.
Both obtained patents for camera designs capable of taking photos with a 360 degree field of view. J.R. Connon obtained a patent in 1888 for “a photographic instrument by which a continuous panoramic view of any scene may be produced”, and W.J. Johnston, whose patent date of November 29, 1904 is stamped on the inside of the panoramic back of this Century Cirkut camera.
While the “Connons of Elora” are well documented in the Wellington County Museum and Archives, Johnston is notable for his involvement in the Rochester Panoramic Camera Co., founder of the Panoramic Camera Company of Canada, as well as connections with the Andrew Merrilees Collection of negatives and prints and the 1910 panoramas of Niagara Falls by W.M. Thompson Freeland.

Deux Canadiens, John Robert Connon (1862-1931) et William James Johnston (1856-1941), ont contribué à la mise au point de la caméra panoramique.
Les deux ont obtenu des brevets pour la conception d’une caméra possible de prendre des photos avec un champ de vision de 360 degrés. J.R. Connon a obtenu un brevet en 1888 pour «un instrument photographique par lequel une vue panoramique continue de n'importe quelle scène peut être produite», et W.J. Johnston, dont la date de brevet du 29 novembre 1904 est gravée à l'intérieur du boitier panoramique de cette caméra Century Cirkut.
Alors que les Connons d’Elora (Ontario) sont bien documentés dans les archives du Wellington County Museum, Johnston est remarquable pour son implication dans la Rochester Panoramic Camera Co., fondateur de la Panoramic Camera Company of Canada, ainsi que des connexions avec la collection de négatifs Andrew Merrilees, et les panoramas des chutes Niagara prisent en 1910 par William Thompson Freeland.

Used by a well-known panoramic photographer from the Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario area, this camera outfit belonged to Ernest Denton (1883-1957), owner of the Denton Photo Studio in Berlin/Waterloo from about 1912 to 1955. The donor, who worked at the Forde Studio, acquired the camera sometime in the 1970’s.
We are currently working with the Grace Schmidt Room of Local History, Kitchener Public Library to locate Denton panoramic photos taken with this camera.

The Berlin Contingent is photographed on the steps of an unidentified building in Guelph, Ontario, likely prior to heading overseas to fight in the Great War of 1914-18.
