I was really impressed with the Collaborators, a relatively new team that is even more impressive considering that different types of aircraft are flown.

Prototyping for the Collaborative Major Project

Created by Apache Elementary School, Albuquerque, NM

Artists: Jyzaiah, Jayden, Elizabeth, David, Xia, Roman

Title: Traditions Back Then and Now

Teacher: Beth Kassay

Theme: Home

Materials: Canvas and acrylic paint.

Did you enjoy this project? Yes, the students loved the way it developed.

About: Students began their art by depicting a ceramic pot. Each student added designs to the pot.

As we discussed in art the use of the empty space at the same time we re-visited the theme. Students decided to put food in the pot, because part of a home is the food we eat there. We looked traditional food that would have been eaten by Native Americans and they choose to put "The Three Sisters" - corn, beans and squash. These are foods we still eat and enjoy today.

Chili was added, because we love our chili here in N.M. In the smaller pots- there is salt and pinto beans.

“The Saturn V is the ideal icon to represent a big dream. This rocket was designed and built as a collaboration of nearly half-a-million people and allowed our human species to venture beyond our world and stand on ANOTHER - SURELY one of the biggest dreams of all time. ENABLING THE DREAMS of young people to touch this mighty rocket sends a powerful message in conjunction with creating an educational curriculum to engage students to embrace the power of learning through many important subjects”

-Neil deGrasse Tyson, Director of the Hayden Planetarium, New York

Leaders, social innovators, and decision makers from large and small businesses, corporations, higher education institutions, government, non-profits, social enterprises, social venture capital firms, and more joined in exploring how we can effectively collaborate to create a sustainable future as part of the Accelerate Collaborating for Sustainability Conference in Guelph ON, June 10-11, 2013.

A collaborative new dance/music project inspired by Dr. Karen Munroe’s research on the social and mating habits of squirrels (and those who study them). Original music for the project composed by Sean Ellis Hussey '14 with choreography by Ashley Haviland, Caroline Guy, Olivia Watson, Gabriella Martinez, Marina Lauff and Sara Whale. In this humorous romp, the audience is invited to follow a group of student biologists and their trusty mentor as they hit the wilds to observe the social and mating systems of the round tailed ground squirrel. But watch out…who is really watching whom?

George Forbes (1849-1936) was a gifted electrical engineer, inventor and astronomer. In 1872, he was appointed to the Chair of Natural Philosophy at Anderson’s University, where he lectured on the advantages of electricity as a means of traction and collaborated with James Young – the future ‘father of the oil industry’ – on research into the velocity of light. In 1874, Forbes headed a British expedition to Hawaii to observe the transit of Venus. The contacts he forged on his return trip home, which took him across Peking, St Petersburg, the Gobi Desert and Siberia, enabled him to become the sole British war correspondent with the Russian army in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878. This earned Forbes the honour of the Russian order of St George.

After leaving the University in 1880, Forbes relocated to London where he established himself as a key figure in the field of electrical power engineering. Amongst other achievements, he became the Manager of the British Electric Light Company, which manufactured arc lamps and carbon filaments; was engaged to report on the best means of powering the City and South London Railway (Forbes recommended electricity), and acted as consultant on various hydroelectric schemes at home and abroad, notably at Niagara Falls.

In the early twentieth century, Forbes switched his attention to the development of military equipment, particularly rangefinders. He invented an infantry rangefinder that was used in the Boer War, and worked with the Admiralty from 1903-1906, developing a gunsight that was still in use at the beginning of the Second World War. Forbes also revived both his passion for astronomy and his links to Glasgow, delivering the David Elder lectures on astronomy at the Royal Technical College, the successor body to Anderson’s University, between 1906 and 1930. The University of Strathclyde maintains its link with Forbes through Forbes Hall, a student hall of residence named after him in 1987.
