Snow-capped Colima Volcano, the most active volcano in Mexico, rises abruptly from the surrounding landscape in the state of Jalisco. Colima is actually a melding of two volcanoes, the older Nevado de Colima to the north and the younger, historically active Volcan de Colima to the south. Legend has it that gods sit atop the volcano on thrones of fire and ice.

Part of the US Geological Survey's "Earth as Art 2" collection of images taken by the Landsat 7 satellite, the ASTER instrument aboard the Terra satellite, and the MODIS instruments aboard the Terra and Aqua satellites.
Since 1972, Landsat satellites have collected from space information about Earth’s continents and coastal areas, enabling scientists to study many aspects of the planet and to evaluate changes caused by both natural processes and human practices. This image was created by visualizing both visible-light and infrared data in colors visible to the human eye; band combinations and colors were chosen to optimize their dramatic appearance.

Many expressive ceramic sculptures of small, hairless, fat dogs have been found in tombs in Northwestern Mexico. There a culture known as Colima evolved around 2200 and 1500 years ago. The people of the Colima Culture valued their dogs, who were their companions, guardians and sometimes even their food. These dogs are thought to represent the Xoloitzcuintli ('Xolo', pronounced 'Sholo', for short), or Mexican Hairless Dog, a breed that was highly valued in ancient Mesoamerica.
Ancient stories illustrate the importance of dogs in pre-Columbian culture. One story tells us of the first man who survived the great flood thanks to his friend—dog. Dog did everything for the first man including finding corn to eat and making fire.
Some of the pre-Columbian peoples believe dogs were the companions of the god of the underworld. Others believed that dogs guarded the souls of the dead as they traveled through the dangerous regions of the underworld. Dogs, like this one, were probably placed in Colima tombs to accompany and guard the soul in the afterlife.

Big Bend National Park, Texas. Renee and I ascended via the Pinnacles trail, saw two birds by the cabin in the Boots Spring trail and descended via the Laguna Meadows trail.
We faced wind gusts of ~20 MPH going up but once we got to the Boots Spring trail the wind calmed down and the birds started to sing.
This 10+ mile, 7 hour trek is one of the most difficult hikes we have taken to see a regular nesting bird species in the ABA area.

[Texas Hotspot: Chisos Mtns, Big Bend NP, TX] The Colima Warbler is our most inaccessible warbler; requiring an exhausting, day-long hike up the Chisos Mountains where fewer than 200 pairs nest. It is not found anywhere else in the US. Because of its inaccessibility, it is also our least studied warbler with its nest discovered as recently as 1932. This species is uncommon but regular at this hotspot and best seen from April through August.
[Description: The Chisos Mountains offer the most unique birding opportunities at Big Bend National Park. The park itself is found at the border with Mexico in Southwest Texas with the closest major city being El Paso.]
Leaving the Michoacan coast and heading inland northeast and back home. (only 5000 km to go). This park - Laguna la Maria, near Colima - boasted great birding, and it was, but I don't have the necessary lense to document, so you will have to trust me. The water of the lagoon was this strange colour but if you watch the video below you will see it quite differently. My camera is accurate - at least on this particular day. To reach the park you pass a beautiful active volcano. Pics to follow.
The last of the Colima images with its fabulous volcano and the sierra mountains. The ambling cow I was talking about.
Start at 5,000 feet elevation, walk four and a half miles with an elevation gain of 2,000 feet and you too can observe a Colima Warbler in the United States. Well worth the hike but then you have to walk the same distance back. Going up is hard on the lungs, coming down is hard on the knees. Boot Springs, Big Bend NP, Brewster County, Texas,
