The ancient artists of Colima produced vessels with a glossy red, or sometimes black, surface. They obtained the surface by burnishing the object with a polished agate tool before firing. The red color comes from the slip, a very fine liquified clay in which the piece was dipped. This slip contained a large percentage of natural oils and waxes. Most Colima sculpture is made to be used. This wide mouthed vessel may have been a portrait of a prominent person. There is a small amount of restoration on the rim.
The vessel measures 7 3/4” x 6”.
