Since these terns no longer nest near Merritt, BC I have missed them. It was fun being so close to them in Alberta. They are my favorite tern because of their unique color!
This one here looks like he's smiling.. they did just mate in front of me before I took the shot lol.
Taken near Cold Lake, AB. Was my first time every photographing this species with any accuracy. I rarely see them so it was a thrill. There has been a 62% decline of this species.. 95% of the population breeds in Canada's vital Boreal Forest.Clear-cutting greatly impacts this vulnerable species.

A great find from my camping trip to Cold Lake Provincal Park, a Blackburnian Warbler. A really beauty to find and photograph.

A Red-necked Grebe pair deposit vegetation at the beginnings of the floating nest where the eggs will be laid and incubated, and the young cared for and fed until they fledge. This scene took place near Cold Lake, Alberta, Canada.

A male Blue-winged Teal lifts off from a soft carpet of algal vegetation, showing its ability to jump quickly into the air. (And in this case, it is not getting the added lift given by wings pushing down against water.) This scene unfolded near Cold Lake, Alberta, Canada.
Attached to 443 Maritime Helicopter Sqn 12 Wing based at Victoria Int'l Airport, it crossed the Rockies to appear in the airshow. A huge treat!

This Boreal Chickadee with characteristic brown cap was located near Cold Lake in eastcentral Alberta, Canada. That is within the North American boreal forest, the typical habitat of this species.
A Red-necked Grebe carries nest material at a small lake near Cold Lake, Alberta, Canada. A Yellow Water Lily is in flower nearby.
Cold Lake, AB Airshow. My first time at a show up there. Awesome venue, great show, but unfortunately, tragedy struck when a pilot flying a T-28 Trojan went down resulting in the pilot's death. Very sad turn of events.
CF-18 Hornet, Cold Lake Airshow July 17, 2016.
This male Hairy Woodpecker was bringing food (as was the female, which does not have red markings) to the young that can be made out inside the nesting cavity in this image. This tree was very close to the northwestern shore of Cold Lake, Alberta, Canada. A part of the provincial park of that name is accessible via the Primrose Lake Road.
A yellow canoe, with paddles propped up against a tree at our back country, island campsite on Cold Lake in Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park, Ontario.
Saturday was a tough day at Cold Lake. Smoke from wildfires in northern Alberta grounded all flights save the pilots flying all-weather CF-18 Hornets of 409 'Nighthawk' Tactical Fighter Squadron, 4 Wing Cold Lake; and this CH-149 Cormorant attached to 442 Transport and Rescue squadron, 19 Wing Comox.
It's not a 'hornet', but in this posture and moment, it's looking and throwing a dangerous Hornet vibe.
That said, this rescue squadron sporting hi-res yellow and red will do everything to bring you home.
Day 81/365
I'm in a haze,
in a daze,
not sure where to go,
where to stay...
At 8.30AM this morning Rosanna was standing in rather chilly water - just so I could get the steam rising off of the water, into the air, with the gentle sunrise.
It's almost too cold to do this, but not quite yet... although Rosanna did run for the hot shower after!!

Mr Bruce Evans died today performing at the CFB Cold Lake airshow, flying his T-28B Trojan. I thought I would try panning, using his take-off role, never imagining the tragedy that followed. It was clear to everyone as the announcer introduced Mr. Evans before his flight that he loved flying. Terribly sorry it was Mr Evans' last flight. Deepest condolences to family and friends.

Kind of sums things up right now.....had one last chance to capture a Lake Erie sunrise last weekend , prior to returning to India. Now it is time to vacate a house that we have lived in for almost 2 years (needless to say there is a lot to do!!)....then a three part trip to Thailand.....followed by a two week hotel stay in Hyderabad...and then it is time to repatriate back to the US....61 days and counting.
