Out birding this morning, no success on the bird end, but I did find this. This is the seedpod of Gymnocladus dioicus, aka as the Kentucky Coffeetree. The tree is listed under the Threatened status in Ontario (www.ontario.ca/page/kentucky-coffeetree), and is quite a rare sight I gather. Posted on iNaturalist, so if the ID is incorrect I will alter in due course.
Kind of interesting the way the leaves are scalloped.
This is the second year I've had this little tree.
She's a coffee farmer smiled shyly when we shoot her. Lovely smile ;-)
Shot during recent outing with Dr Jamal , Wan Badang, Dr Ali from Malaysia,
Johnny Siahaan and Dr.Anwar from Medan - North Sumatra.

Yellow-eyed Monkey Frogs or Blue-sided Tree Frogs (Agalychis anae) are listed as IUCN endangered. I found the eyes of this species captivating.
This is not a Kentucky coffeetree, but the tree that greeted me each morning as I enjoyed too many cups of coffee. It stood by itself, at the edge of a stand of quaking aspens on one side, sagebrush on the other.
Safe and sound inside. Getting a little sun.
We had a little freezing temperatures last night. It'll be back in the 70s next week.
Shiny new leaves put on over the summer. Maybe next year it might try blooming and producing some beans?

Coffea Arabica.
Under the shade trees, but I understand that some commercial growers use that technique successfully.
Frost could be arriving any day now. It's time to migrate the Coffee Tree, Cacti, and Orchids into the garage.
Evidently it needed more food than I was giving it. They also like to be pot-bound, but, who knew. :-) The leaves are getting a little scorched, even under the hardwood canopy.
It almost didn't survive the winter stay in the garage. I thought we had lost it. The leaves are finally standing up and new growth is appearing.
Yellow-eyed Monkey Frogs or Blue-sided Tree Frogs (Agalychis anae) are listed as IUCN endangered. They were formerly widespread and abundant. They were so common that they were often seen around coffee plantations, and are called coffee frogs by locals.
This individual is pictured perching on the branch of a coffee tree and inside the red, green and yellow berries are coffee beans. The beans are harvested and roasted before ending up in your morning mug of joe.
This was shot was extremely challenging to take, but I think it was worth the work and ended up being my absolute favorite shot of the trip.
Today it is cold and foggy here, I would prefer to be in the warmth of the Jamaican Blue Mountains with coffee trees, banana plants and palm trees...
Bebeka Coffee Plantation is located in south western Ethiopia in Mizan Teferi.
With 6,000 hectares and around 5,000 employees the plantation is the largest coffee plantation in Ethiopia and it is also the oldest one. An altitude of 1,500 meters provides an ideal climate and enables the best growing conditions for the plants that are well protected by the larger forest trees which provide shade from the midday sun and preserve the moisture in the soil.
Ethiopia is traditionally a coffee country as it is the original country were coffe was produced. The word coffee comes from the name of the area where it is mainly grown, which is Kaffa.
Ethiopia produces 200,000 tons of coffee each year, of which almost half is for domestic consumption, the highest in Africa.

"And behind me is the Gymnocladus Dioicus, more commonly known as, the Kentucky Coffeetree. These are wonderful trees for climbing and storing nuts for the winter."
Yes, believe it or not, but we grow our own coffee trees. Actually they are like weeds in the garden. No critters touch these trees, the flower, the beans, the leaves. Goes to tell us something, that just maybe this is just plain no good for us LOL.
The Kentucky coffeetree is native to the central states of America from Pennsylvania to Nebraska and from Minnesota to Oklahoma. This tree gets its name because early Kentucky settlers noticed the resemblance of its seeds to coffee beans. In earlier times, its wood was used in the construction of railway sleeper cars.
Kona coffee, grown in the Kona region in Hawaii Island (the Big Island), is among the world's most delicious and expensive coffee varieties. The best of the best is the 100% Kona Peaberry. For those coffee aficionados, visiting local coffee factories and see how coffee beans are processed is an interesting experience.
I usually like dark roast but this time I bought both dark and medium roast peaberries. For Kona coffee, if I have to pick just one, I actually like medium roast a little better. It reminds me of a rare Brazilian peaberry I bought a long ago.
The following is from Wikipedia: Kona coffee is the market name for coffee cultivated on the slopes of Hualalai and Mauna Loa in the North and South Kona Districts of the Big Island of Hawaii. It is one of the most expensive coffees in the world. Only coffee from the Kona Districts can be described as "Kona". The weather of sunny mornings, cloud or rain in the afternoon, little wind and mild nights combined with porous, mineral rich volcanic soil, creates favorable coffee growing conditions.

doesn't everyone dream, once in awhile, of getting away from it all, getting close to the earth, living life on your own terms?
In Hawaii, a lot of people dream of being coffee farmers. Or come to Hawaii with that dream.
Me, I would love to grow chocolate. It's harder than it appears....
These trees are rare up here, but we have a few nearby so I collected some seeds to grow a few. They're coming along quite nicely.
A second coffee tree arrived in the mail yesterday. Only 8 inches tall. The first one is 30" now and experienced 90 degree weather and full sun yesterday with no ill effects.
I can't say exactly why I like this image. It may be the postures of these common grackles, or it may be the color of the new leaves, or the placement of the birds in the image, or the fact that the bird on the left has a bug in its bill and the others would like to share it.
This is a grab shot! I was walking with my camera on a trail behind our garden when this small flock of grackles flew to the top of this Kentucky Coffeetree and I stretched out my zoom lens and fired. Then they were gone. I had no hopes for the image until I looked at it on the computer. I don't keep photos unless I get an emotional response from them. Again, I like this one, but I can't tell you exactly why.
I made this image with my Pentax K5 and Pentax 18-135mm lens. Processing was done with Aperture 3 and NIK software.
