Inks Lake State Park, Burnet County, Texas. An early spring day hike through the central Texas state park at Inks Lake. Opened in 1950, Inks Lake State Park is a small park tucked on the south end of the lake (one of the smaller of seven lakes that form the Highland Lakes chain along the Colorado River northwest of Austin). Primarily it is a park for camping, fishing, boating and golf - but there are a few short trails near the southwest end of the park.
There are a few looping trails one or two miles in length each, color-coded with numerous markers along the trails. None of them are difficult at all - just gentle climbing through the rolling rocky outcrops of the Llano Uplift.
The geology of the area is interesting and complex. While the majority of Texas is covered with recent sedimentary rocks and deposits, there is a large, ancient blotch in the center of the state called the Llano Uplift. Dating back over a billion years (some of the oldest exposed rocks in America), the heavily metamorphosed Valley Spring gneiss and Town Mountain Granite form gentle, highly eroded hills around the lake.
Unfortunately, it was a bit too early in the spring season and much of the vegetation was still brown from winter. It would be nice to return later during summer and spend some more time exploring the area geology. Pictures taken March 16, 2008.

On Thursday, December 11, Fleming Elementary Grade 7 students were engrossed in their tablets as they guided their little Grade 1 buddies through the wonders of digital computing. They were among tens of thousands of students around the world participating in the Hour of Code – an international initiative aimed at encouraging students to explore software development and coding.
