Cockroaches are not a creature I generally like but there are some very colourful ones.

Apologies and no intention to be cavalier regarding the lives of insects, but I did dispatch this cockroach on April 14th, 2013. It was such a fine looking specimen that it seemed to be a total waste to simply throw it away so its corpse was pressed into service as a focus stacking model.

Ecdysis is the process by which an organism (in the Ecdysozoa clade) change its cuticule. This picture was taken in Oporapa, Huila, Colombia with a Nikon D7000 equiped with a 60 mm lens and a ring flash.

The little holes on the top part of their abdomen is used by this cockroach to make a hiss noise.
This was taken with a Canon AE-1 50mm f/3.5 macro lens. I used Arista EDU Ultra 100 film that I roll myself from a 100ft roll. This was developed in Rodinal 50:1 mix for 7 minutes at 20C.

Every time I wear these shoes, I'm told they are “cockroach killers.” At first, I thought that was in reference to the big, square heels. I imagine they could quite effectively crush a bug. I’ve since learned that the pointed toes are the lethal end. They are easily wedged into corners to exterminate the fleeing pests.

Thankfully, I haven’t seen a cockroach in over 10 years. I think my cats keep them at bay (or they just aren’t common in Cincinnati or Sacramento).
