Jonathan on the footpath alongside the River Thames (no that's not it in the picture, that's a drainage ditch, the river is out of shot on the right). This is where the path goes across Cock Marsh. This is a wide area of flat land at a huge bend in the river, the area was created by the silting up of the river on the inside of this bend over centuries
Near a large and ancient poultry market so not nearly as sensational as the name suggests.
An alternative, and less prosaic offering suggests it was so-called because in the middle ages it was the venue for cock fights.
A further suggestion relates to a guilded statue can be seen high on a wall (I haven't seen it, perhaps it is no longer there?) which represented a pub (long gone) called the 'Fortune oif War'. The statue was of a naked boy.
