Finally got out to shoot today. The weather is still a bit too warm to find much wildlife at the local park. I did, however ask this Mandarin Duck to pose for a quick portrait. I’m happy with the results... but I’m easy to please : )

Have a Fabulous Friday and Wonderful weekend !!

The Mandarin Duck

The Mandarin Duck is a perching duck species native to the Eastern Palearctic Region, which includes Mongolia, China, Tibet, Korea and Japan. It is medium-sized is closely related to the North American wood duck.

The adult male has a red bill, large white crescent above the eye and reddish face and "whiskers". The male's breast is purple with two vertical white bars and has two orange feathers that stick up like boat sails. The female is similar to the female wood duck, with a white eye-ring and stripe running back from the eye.

Mandarin ducks breed in densely wooded areas near shallow lakes, marshes or ponds. They nest in cavities in trees close to water and during the spring, the females lay their eggs in the tree's cavity after mating.

A single clutch of nine to twelve eggs is laid in April or May. Shortly after the ducklings hatch, their mother flies to the ground and coaxes the ducklings to leap from the nest. After all of the ducklings are out of the tree, they will follow their mother to a nearby body of water.

Mandarins feed by dabbling or walking on land. The diet of mandarin ducks changes seasonally; in the fall and winter, they mostly eat acorns and grains. In the spring and summer they eat insects, snails, fish and aquatic plants.

Mandarin Duck - Aix galericulata

The beautiful mandarin duck was introduced from the Far East, where it can still be found in China, Japan, Korea and parts of Russia. It escaped, or was deliberately released, from captivity in the UK. Mandarin ducks are actually quite shy birds, often hiding beneath overhanging willows and usually only forming small flocks.

A beautiful, unmistakable duck: male mandarins have elaborate plumage with orange plumes on their cheeks, orange 'sails' on their back, and pale orange sides; females are dull in comparison, with grey heads, brown backs and white eyestripe.

Introduced from China and now found on park lakes and other wetlands with overhanging trees, mainly in South East England, but also in North England, Wales and Scotland.

The mandarin duck nests in holes in trees, sometimes high up and a long way from the water. Shortly after the ducklings hatch, the female flies down and tries to coax the young to jump from the nest. Once they have left the tree and made their way back to water, the father will return to the family and help to protect the ducklings.

While at a local park, I came upon this Male Mandarin Duck grooming his feathers. He certainly made a show of it… to my delight.

We have a pair of wood pigeons that regularly dine on the bird feeder. Our cat Ozzy talks to them every time they visit, trying to coax them down to his level. But on the odd occasion he manages to get to their level and this particular day swiped one as it flew to safety. No birdy today Oz but he did manage to dislodge a few feathers that floated down into the greenery, this pair perfectly caught together, entwined until the wind dislodges them.

it is not Spring! The warm weather is coaxing blooms in mid-December from the iris bulbs.

There is only one Icelandic word used in the English language: geyser. Though the word refers to all geysers in general, it comes from a single geyser (in fact, the geyser) located in the South West of Iceland. Unfortunately, the Great Geysir has been somewhat shy in recent decades, though on special occasions it can sometimes be coaxed into a performance with some soap. When Geysir does perform, it lives up to its name, spuming a jet of steaming water 200 feet skyward.

Strokkur (“the churn”), which spouts a 60-100 foot jet about once every five minutes. The geyser area is also rich in walking paths that lead past steaming vents and colorful, mineral-rich mud formations.

The fleeting anemone with its dainty white petals is said to be a symbol of purity and innocence. April showers coax these shy flowers to fill a garden with a white cloud that dances in the wind. Hence the nickname "windflower."

I've been waiting awhile for this great horned owlet to take his first flight, and today was the day. He landed in a tree about one hundred yards from the nest. He spent the next few minutes trying to coax mom and dad into joining him, which they were having no part of. After spending about ten minutes alone, he decided it was a good time to take a nap. Gumbo's amazing journey:

During October, 2014, my girlfriend found a beautiful box turtle in the middle of the road, crushed by a car. His shell was in pieces, and with eyes ruptured out of his head. I took him to the Turtle Rehab Clinic at NC State Veterinary School. He miraculously survived surgery, but his eyes couldn’t be saved.

We adopted him, but were told the odds were slim, because blind turtles often lose the will to live, and refuse to eat. It took several months of love and coaxing, but he now eats ravenously from our hands. Gumbo responds to his name and several other words.

He has learned to use his other senses to navigate. This picture shows him walking through our garden. You can visit Gumbo on Facebook www.facebook.com/gumboturtle/

Golden Spangled French Marans: Poule de Marans Cockerel

(I think...)

This grumpy-looking, handsome boy is the only one of about eight young cockerels left to fend for themselves in the hills, about three years ago.

We can only assume that some lovely person dumped the young cockerels as they had no need of them...Such callous behaviour, I feel, and completely unnecessary! Poor wee souls!

We have been trying to coax him into my friends’ farm where they keep hens and geese. Maybe, one day, he will join the gang.

Hello Everyone!

It is a privilege to witness tender interactions such as this parent coaxing the wee one to move into the water. This gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling which I wanted to share with you. For Wannabe Warmer Wednesday, a day to encourage warmth of spirit or weather. WWW!

Thank you for stopping by and for your comments. I do love hearing from you! Have a terrific day!

The last photo that I posted was taken a year ago, because we had had no snow this winter, in fact we had barely had even any frost. Now we have what I am sure will be a record-breaking snowfall - 22" so far with more expected over the next week. We normally get only 3-4" for an entire season. Yikes! We are trying to keep our bird feeders full and have even opened new feeding areas in the plant pots on our covered deck. These Oregon Juncos come every winter, but what is worrying is that Robins and Varied Thrushes are here - coaxed by the formerly unseasonably warm temperatures.

This is an image of Anastasia (Eastern bluebird) trying to coax her little ones to leave the nest. She would stick her head in the box with food in her beak then pull back as the little ones tried to get the food. It took a while but she finally convinced them it was okay.

Yesterday was the one week mark from the fledge, Anastasia and Christian are checking out the box again so I believe they are getting ready for round two.

What's funny is that I have had empty nest syndrome since the little ones left the box, probably because I never got to see them at all after fledge day. I can hear them though :)

Have a wonderful day and happy snapping.

AUTUMN LEAVES – EDITH PIAF (Les Feuilles Mortes)

Autumn sweeps in with coolness of breeze

enraptures the colours of nature with ease

captures the turning burnishing leaves

as they escape some are caught making art as they tease

and coax with enchantment our smiles; make believe

in the magic of the seasons and the balm that relieves

warms us in Winter so we do not grieve

the passing of the seasons and the reasons we leave

to be answered by a higher authority then retrieved

filtering through the ether; responding to our needs

the good to be alive days as we fall to our knees

whispering our thanks in prayers; exacting good deeds

the season of goodwill to all men needs no plea

for it becomes second nature when we thank God and please

Him who carries our burden; who grants us the Tree

of Life that grows strong and tall; it's decreed

that our roots cannot be uprooted and our goodness will feed

the Earth and will nourish generations who succeed

and walk in our footsteps and never concede

defeat over big things or small things but lead

mankind to a better way of life without greed

remembering the true message; remembering to heed

the lessons we are taught and sow and set seed

to live, love, embrace everyone no matter their creed.

Thanks for visiting. I am very grateful for the very kind comments and faves.

I didn't get the 6 months free of hospital pass that I thought I would, so tomorrow I am back to the hospital for an MRI/MRCP scan, but fingers crossed (and a lot of prayers) all will be ok. HFF and please enjoy a very happy weekend, dear friends. See you all very soon <3

After much coaxing from my Flickr friend John Crain, and by taking advantage of the nice discount offered to Pro members, I finally did a book with Blurb. 82 pages of my 2 years shooting at the annual Lime Rock Labor Day event. And I'm sure I will be asked how much?...with the discounts it came to ~$42 dollars, which I thought wasn't bad

I was at one of my favorite spots for fall migration and heard this bird chipping from cover. I was able to coax it out on this limb and get a few shots. I've never seen a first fall Kentucky warbler in this early plumage which I find fascinating. There is no black in the cap at all but rather much brown and olive tones. The black on the face is minimal and low contrast with the adjacent olive areas but the yellow eye-line wrapping around the back of the eye and below it is classic for Kentucky warbler. This is definitely one of my top plumage finds so far this fall rivaled only by a recent absolutely stunning female Br3wster's warbler.

White-crowned Sparrows appear each winter over much of North America to grace our gardens and favorite trails (they live in parts of the West year-round). The smart black-and-white head, pale beak, and crisp gray breast combine for a dashing look – and make it one of the surest sparrow identifications in North America. Watch for flocks of these sparrows scurrying through brushy borders and overgrown fields, or coax them into the open with backyard feeders. As spring approaches, listen out for this bird’s thin, sweet whistle.

She coaxed them with her sun and rain,

And filled the grass with green content,

And made the woods and clover vain

I pulled into the first rest area heading south on I-15 in California. Instead of parking in the paved parking area, I pulled into a dirt/gravel area next to it. I saw a couple of ravens and decided to try to coax them into getting closer with bits of whole wheat bread, next thing I knew I had over a dozen of them. Managed several shots that I was pleased with.

No simple feat, to light a place unknown, untouched and undiscovered.

The eternal storm quaffed, quelled and quieted.

Always the dance of light and shadow, colored, conjured and coaxed.

A light touch, a fresh breath and a simple pleasure rediscovered.

Sharing a simple play of light and color to cap off the weekend.

It was a very cold and cloudy day with strong wind gusts and almost all insects were laying low. I found this docile swift river cruiser dragonfly dangling vertically below a large overhanging leaf and gently coaxed it onto my finger where it was content to sit still. Swift river cruisers live up to their name as they are among the fastest dragonflies in flight over long distances and typically patrol and control a river section stretching out the length of a football field or more. Notice all the long spines on its legs for securing prey that is picked off in flight.

Shya looks on in stunned amazement as Galex coaxes the young dragon to come land on his hand.

On Occasion a Lady Bug will come out of hibernation in my windows when the sun shines on the house. I coaxed this one on to a cut Amaryllis flower. It reminds me of Spring!

Bright sunlight and a balmy January temperature of 27 F (-3 C) coaxed this cute Virginia opossum out of its winter den to search for some nourishing food, since it may have been in hiding for a month or more due to the cold winter conditions. As you can see, this shy little possum wasn't in a posing mood this afternoon, although I did see it at dusk as it fed on some peanuts around my bird feeding station.

Longest night of the year..... light your candles all to burn help us coax the sun's return, Happy Solstice!

This is a German Navy Gannet anti-submarine warfare airplane, UA+113, on static display at the Nordholz "Aeronauticum" naval aviation museum.

Quite unique on the Gannet are the two counterrotating props, each powered by it's own turbine engine. The complete power plant was called an Armstrong Siddeley Double Mamba, consisting of two Armstrong Siddeley Mamba driving the counterrotating props through a combining gearbox. The Double Mamba provided 3,145 shp.

The use of coaxial, counterrotating props eliminated the prop torque moment as long as both props received the same amount of power.

And the coaxial arrangement meant that the plane could be flown on one engine (e.g. to save fuel and extend the range) without the adverse effect (yaw moment) that occurs when twins with wing mounted engines are flown as "single".
