standing on the beach watching the storm coming and hoping you don't get your camera wet

In the immortal words of Fleetwood Mac - listen to the wind blow, watch the sun rise.

Is there anything better?

I know the song isn't quite as happy as that, but The Chain is a great song, just saying.

Happy Friday folks :)

The Lofoten Islands are a mountain range 160 km long with wild and craggy mountains that rise directly from the sea. The mountains are formed by rocks that are older than northern Europe, being more than 3 billion years old! The most important transformation of the landscape, however, occurred in the last 2.5 millions years and, in particular, it was shaped during the ice age. The mountain peaks that emerged from the ice during the last ice age, from 9,000 to 11,000 years ago, shaped the landscape. The ice carved small valleys between the rounded tops of the mountains and, when receding, brought large amounts of stones of all sizes with it which settled in the form of moraines. The mountains are surrounded by coastal plains which originated from a series of factors such as ice and marine erosion.

The Lofoten Islands are draped across the turbulent waters of the Norwegian Sea, far above the Arctic Circle. This rare wilderness outpost offers an untrammelled landscape of majestic mountains, deep fjords, squawking seabird colonies and long, surf-swept beaches.

Lofoten is a chain of islands far north on the coast of Norway. Lofoten is an absolutely incredible place. It's gorgeous and dramatic, with mountains growing straight out of the ice-cold waters of an Arctic Ocean. At the same time the climate is fairly mild, thanks to the Gulf Stream.

“The beauty of this place is simply staggering.”

Winter colours! Lofoten in its winter costume displays a palette of deep reds and blues until after the New Year when it changes to the clearest pastel colours you could imagine. The sun dips below the horizon creating colours the likes of which will not be seen at any other time of the year making this an extra special time.

Short days mean that you have a good chance of seeing the Northern Lights. Sometimes they show themselves as a veil of warm green tones, while at other times they flare across the sky as a colour inferno that goes from white to a reddish-purple. Suddenly they’re there, and just as suddenly they might disappear – a natural firework display.

White sand and turquoise blue water. Small waves of turquoise blue water wash gently across the white sand while mountain peaks rise into the blue sky above. Typically the words arctic and beach are not usually mentioned together in the same sentence, however, on the Lofoten islands there are perhaps some of the most spectacular beaches you will ever see.

Autumn can be the best time for mountain hiking, or a trip to the shore. Here you can experience the northern lights while it is still green on the ground, and warmth in the air. Autumn is the time for short and long trips in a kayak or on a bicycle seat. Lofoten is an eldorado for mountain climbers, and if you want to try yourself, courses are constantly arranged. Maybe autumn is the time for you to reap good experiences in raw Lofoten nature -
