...or should I say Chevy Horses.

A classic old Chevy truck with it co working horses nearby.

Happy Truck Thursday!

A slice of the radical change taking place in East Liberty. The pot holes and bricked-in windows and doors of the old building evoke the scruffy East Liberty that is disappearing. The bright paint denoting a co-working space symbolizes the brave new East Liberty of leading edge tech, high-end retail, and runaway gentrification.

I have a huge love for design, I tried many different things in my RL before landing on interior and graphic design. I have always been artistic but I thought I had to go with the mainstream things that everyone else said I needed to do.

But I finally found what I loved doing and I get to do it in Second Life.

I combined many different designers and different sets together to get this amazing Living and Designing Space. My main focuses are; ionic, Cinoe and sprinkles of LAGOM, with many of my other favorites to make this scene.

Darwin Space : to rehabilitate than to destroy. On the right bank of the Garonne in Bordeaux, abandoned buildings has regained its reputation. Graffiti artists have breathed new life to entire walls of a former military base fallen into decay. The grand stone buildings were well renovated now houses an organic restaurant and grocery or a co-working space dedicated to start-up.

Back to my ongoing search for interesting London alleyways. This is a newly redeveloped area called Eccleston Yards, very near to Victoria Station, and something I just stumbled onto as I was walking from Victoria Station down to Battersea Power Station one day a few months back. It consists of a number of small businesses, a 'co-working and creative hub', and a pleasant courtyard with a couple of eating establishments off of it.

It's got a bit of history to it. This from Wikipedia:

"Eccleston Yards was previously the location of Eccleston Place Power Station, owned by Westminster Electric Supply Corporation Ltd. whom supplied electricity to the Mayfair & Belgravia area for the first time in 1891."

Nice to see a historic location like this get a facelift and make it relevant in the 21st century. It's also got a cracking alleyway!

Tallinn Street Quarter, Rīga, Latvia. This Quarter is created by The Free Riga Association that has transformed 16 buildings and 4,000 square meters of space into a vibrant cultural center and since 2020 there are bars, a sound studio, co-working spaces and a hall serving street food.

Of course, street art in Riga is on a different scale... not so widespread as it is in London, where we know the Leake Street graffiti tunnel or Shoreditch and Spitalfields. But I would be wrong to say that street art in Riga is not popular.

Northbound Acela #2254 passes the old Hoen Lithographers building at BIDDLE interlocking on the east side of Baltimore. The old building has been repurposed into a co-working space that serves a number of non-profits and other community organizations. Luckily, the look and feel of the building has preserved for future generations.

Excerpt from www.toronto.ca:

Face to Face/Tête à Tête creates a place for shared conversation along the street. With two unexpectedly long tables, flanked by continuous benches and wrapped with planting, this is a place for concentrated community conversation – animated inside the words Face to Face/Tête à Tête dynamically projected over all of the street furniture surfaces. The narrow striking blue and orange space promotes both intimacy within the bustle of King St, and deliberately intensifies the conversation. Shaped like boomerangs, one table angles toward the street, and one toward the sidewalk, subtly inviting participants to the table angled to watch the passers-by on the sidewalk, or to hail to those on bike and streetcar. The table is a central focus recalling big family dinners –promoting larger collective/community gathering, yet the narrowness allows for individual occupation, co-working, musing, lunching, and dreaming.

The new UCD Moore Centre for Business opened September 2019, and features interactive learning, extensive co-working zones, and a 320-seat lecture theatre.

The facility, next to the UCD Lochlann Quinn School of Business at Belfield, will also include an Entrepreneurship and Innovation Hub, Media Suite, Skills Quarter Support Area, and THINK Lab.

Work has been keeping me rather busy these days so I haven't been posting as much as I normally would like too, but the good news is that I have some work trips coming up to Vienna and Budapest.

I'm sure I'll find an evening or morning somewhere to sneak out with a camera and photograph these lovely cities. Any recommendations for what I should absolutely see or do in Vienna and Budapest?

Or if you're a startup founder, incubator, co-working space owner or event organizer in Vienna or Budapest and want to have a Twitter speaker / mentor work with you, let me know and we might be able to do something cool.

coworking today at Fresh Peaks coworking cafe. Taking a moment to let myself be taken to the realm of fairies and witches :-))

Ahh starting the day in a gorgeous location, fresh coffee filling the air and the unwritten story of visitors and shared sweet moments to come...

Today I am at DC Eco Coffee. No kitty cats today. Just me. Sometimes a girl needs to venture out on her own. That's the beauty of ever-happy cats.

Later, I will drag myself to the gym as .. its been a minute since I went ;-) And then I'll be back here to properly start the day.

Built in 1924, this Classical Revival-style building was designed by Benjamin H. Marshall and Charles E. Fox for the Sheridan Trust and Savings Bank. The twelve-story building is clad in white terra cotta with green terra cotta spandrels and trim at the base, one-over-one windows on the upper levels, fluted ionic pilasters, cornices with dentils, a curved corner at the intersection of the building’s two principal facades, a wedge-shaped footprint, and decorative reliefs. The building was designated a Chicago Landmark in 2008, and is one of the structures that comprises the Uptown Square Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000, and designated a Chicago Landmark District in 2016. Today, the building houses apartments on the upper floors and a co-working space on the lower levels.

Ex-Jubilee line carriages from 1983, on top of an old viaduct that used to lead to the former Broad Street Station, that sat next to Liverpool Street until it closed in the mid 1980s. Although most of the railway viaduct was demolished, a small piece remains.

Village Underground started in 2006, with the aim of building affordable studios for creative people who were struggling to get a foothold in London. Four tube carriages and two shipping containers were converted into co-working spaces.

Woolworths, 33 High Street, Margate, England. This store opened in 1925 and closed in 2009. It remained empty until 2019, when there were plans to turn it into a cafe, exhibition space, and co-working spaces on the ground floor.

Opened in early 2020, the 34 story tower features first class food and beverage on an expansive pool deck with signature lazy river, modern fitness facilities, a jam room and performance space, and abundant co-working space. Every chance I get with a new ear, I discuss wildlife photography. Those closest to me have become certainly numb to my consistent ramblings and have no doubt perfected the obligatory nod. However as it often does, persistence paid off!

Two weeks ago I was meeting with my boss and another co-working friend. With the precision of huckster days gone by, I masterfully wove wildlife photography into the conversation. To my amazement one of the ladies replied “we have eagles in our backyard”… a reply I have heard before only to go and find everything from pigeons to hawks. It was when she shared an iPhone photo of a bald eagle sitting in a tree and invited me to come by anytime that triggered my out of body experience!

This morning I showed up at her home commenced to capture some 160+ shots of this mature male. My presence and actions have been the cause of many eagles scream over the years, but in this case he was going through the motions, with nothing coming out. As I closed the gap he would open his mouth, always in the direction of the nest. I believe he was communicating with the nest in a range that a human cannot hear. I just hope he had nice things to say!

Why am I photographing a stairwell you might ask. Well, because it's a very cool stairwell. This is one of Saigon's super trendy Cafe Apartments. I had mistakenly identified it as 42 Nguyen Hue (Walking Street) which is also a great place to explore. This one is actually 14 Ton That Dam in District one. These old apartment buildings have been taken over by hipster entrepreneurs and re-purposed into eclectic communities of tiny shops, cafés and co-working spaces. This dim stairwell with its cool natural light filtering through dirty windows is worth the climb.

Currently the building houses a wide variety of companies and a modern co-working space. [wiki]

The Hambicamp 2.0 is an education camp where workshops, political and cultural events take place. It's also a space for self-realization.

"The structures such as kitchen, material tent, information tent, press and even a co-working space remain in the camp in "small but fine" form. Winter is getting cold and long, so warm clothes, tea and hot food are here. The camp is equipped with running water, composting toilets, sleeping tents and electricity from the sun. Here you have the opportunity to spend the night in your own tent or in one of our tents."

I'm not always the sort of person who bemoans urban change and redevelopment, but it has to be said that the destruction of Chicago's industrial heritage at the hands of developers- especially in the mushrooming West Loop and Near West Side, and especially over the course of the last decade- has been intense and wanton.

Granted, many of the meatpacking concerns and wholesale warehouses the area used to be known for have been adaptively reused in their new roles as tech offices, (Google's Chicago headquarters in the old Fulton Market Cold Storage warehouse is a good example of this) high-end restaurants and bars, co-working spaces, condos and the like, but not all are recognizable after their transformations, and the ADM mill complex at Racine Avenue, long a landmark on the Near West Side, has not even been lucky enough to undergo such renovation.

The first parts of the complex originally opened as the Eckhart & Swan Milling Company in 1897- the "ghost" of the original company name could still be seen in very faded paint on the top floor of the first building until demolition began. The grain elevators were built in 1927 and expanded in 1948. After a few corporate restructurings over the years, Archer Daniels Midland took over the mill in 1990, and operated it until the combination of the opening of a new complex downstate in Mendota, coupled with the rising real estate value of the area, caused ADM to seek to divest itself of the mill. The property was sold to development company Sterling Bay (who has been behind the redevelopment of much of the West Loop, and is also the owner and developer of the Lincoln Yards project) in 2018. Demolition of the historic mill complex began in February, and doesn't appear to be sparing anything.

Sterling Bay had initially talked about constructing a new Metra station on the site to serve their new development, but this idea seems to have floundered. Rideshare cars, Teslas, bikes and scooters will soon replace the grain trucks that swarmed around the facility- and the Norfolk Southern freight job that was the the raison d'etre of the last active section of the Pennsylvania Railroad "Panhandle" line in the area has since departed. At least the heavy Metra and Amtrak traffic will still pass the site of one of the last heavy industries on Chicago's near West Side.

This is a two-tower luxury apartment community in the heart of downtown Fort Lauderdale. Opened in early 2020, the 42/46-story towers will feature first class food and beverage on an expansive pool deck with signature lazy river, modern fitness facilities, a jam room and performance space, and abundant co-working space. RIVERx will embody Fort Lauderdale's cultural emergence, where sunny leisure meets metropolitan culture.
