I cannot believe I have not been to Cluny or Burgundy since 2018. In the nineteen eighties we had holiday in Burgundy every year. Staying in a little hamlet called Sommere that was half way between Macon and Cluny . It remains my favourite area of France . My new year resolution for 2022 is to return to France, you can keep all the exotic long haul stuff, I dream of sitting outside a French cafe in a quiet square taking a demitasse of coffee . Followed by a visit to a local boulangerie to buy fresh bread and pain au chocolate. We do have one more English Holiday booked in May in Sussex I hope it's my last British holiday for some time . Holidays are not the same when you do not have to use another language
In France many historic monasteries and abbeys are intact unlike in England where most of the them were destroyed during the reformation .Cluny Abbey is an exception it was heavily damaged in the French revolution . Cluny is a small town in the Mâconnais region of Burgundy. It is odd to think that until the building of St Peters in Rome in mid fifteenth century it had the largest church in Europe .
The abbey was constructed in the Romanesque architectural style, with three churches built in succession from the 4th to the early 12th centuries. Cluny was founded by William I, Duke of Aquitaine in 910. The abbey was notable for its stricter adherence to the Rule of St. Benedict, whereby Cluny became acknowledged as the leader of western monasticism. Sister abbeys to Cluny spread throughout Europe , there were 22 linked priories just in England

En vue du 1100ème anniversaire de la fondation en 910 de l'abbaye de Cluny, des bornes multimédia de réalité augmentée (CF www.neoma-interactive.com/realite-augmentee-a-labbaye-cluny/) avaient été installées à partir de 2008 sur le site de l'abbaye.
Ces bornes interactives orientables montraient aux visiteurs des images de synthèse de l'abbaye disparue vues de l'endroit où ils se trouvent.
J'ai vu ces bornes en fonctionnemment en juillet 2014, c'était fabuleux.
La photo de droite prise en 2014 restitue ainsi une image saisissante de l'abbaye de Cluny III tirée de l'une de ces bornes, comme si nous étions dans une réalité alternative où l'abbaye est encore là intacte.
On peut ainsi comparer avec la photo de gauche prise à un endroit proche qui, elle, représente la réalité actuelle.
Hélas, ces bornes n'ont pas résisté au temps. Lors d'une visite ultérieure fin 2014, plusieurs d'entre elles étaient en panne.
Lorsque je suis venu à nouveau sur le site en 2016, elles avaient été démontées. Interrogé là-dessus, un gardien du site m'a dit que de nouveaux dispositifs similaires seraient en cours de réalisation.

Cluny - alternative realities
For the 1100th anniversary of the founding in 910 of Cluny's Abbey, augmented reality multimedia terminals (CF www.neoma-interactive.com/realite-augmentee-a-labbaye-cluny/) had been installed starting from 2008 on the site of the abbey.
These directional interactive terminals were showing to the visitors synthetic images of the lost abbey from the place where they stood.
I saw these terminals functioning in July 2014, it was fabulous.
The shot on the wright taken in 2014 upon one of these interactive terminals thus shows an amazing image of Cluny IIIth's Abbey, as if we were in an alternate reality where the abbey is still complete there.
We can compare with the shot on the left taken in a place near that represents the actual reality.
Alas, these terminals have not resisted time. During a subsequent visit in late 2014, many of them were down. When I came back to the site in 2016, they had been dismantled.
I asked a gardian of the site about that, he answered me that similar new devices should be in progress.

Le Farinier est un bâtiment gothique datant du troisième quart du 13e siècle, il fut construit sur deux étages et utilisé pour stocker l'alimentation des moines.
Au rez-de-chaussée, le cellier est voûté d’ogives sur une série de colonnes qui le divisent en deux nefs. A l’étage, le grenier à farine présente une belle charpente en châtaignier.
Il abrite maintenant un musée lapidaire où sont exposés les célèbres chapiteaux romans du chœur de Cluny III.

The "Farinier" is a Gothic building from the third quarter of the 13th century, it was built on two floors and used to store the monks food.
On the ground floor, the cellar is arched with ogives on a series of columns that divide it into two naves. Upstairs, the flour granary has a beautiful frame in chestnut.
It now houses a lapidary museum with the famous Romanesque capitals from Cluny IIIth's choir.

We are now back home after a rather lovely holiday in France . We stayed in the little town of Cluny thats sits in the Mâconnais hills in Southern Burgundy . Its a charming town that I first visited in 1988 and have returned there regularly .

I am showing pictures of stained glass windows (Le Mans-Chartres) let me tell you that the people who did those works of art were never get paid for it, they worked for God and only God knew

La rame Duplex 239, pelliculée aux couleurs du dernier Disney gravit les fortes rampes qui précèdent la gare du Creusot-Montceau TGV. Elle longe par la même occasion le viaduc de Montsarrin, vestige de l'ancienne ligne Montchanin - Cluny. Avec sa consœur elles assurent le 6630 Lyon-Perrache - Paris-Lyon.

Cluny, France
Während der französischen Revulution wurden alle kirchlichen Einrichtungen aufgelöst. Das riesige Areal mit seinen den Gebäuden des Klosters in Cluny zu einem großen Teil zerstört. Und doch ist es 1100 Jahre nach seiner Gründung noch ein beeindruckendes historisches Zeugnis und einen Besuch wert.
