Victor Vu is a Dean’s Honored Graduate in the Departments of Mathematics and Computer Science. He is graduating with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, as well as a combined bachelors/masters degree in computer science. Victor is being recognized for his research efforts under the direction of Professors Peter Stone and Mike Walfish, which have culminated in five publications that appear in prestigious venues in computer science, as well as for his contributions to teaching at the University of Texas.
His research with Professor Walfish studied the question of how one machine (a client) can specify a computation to another one (a server) and then, without executing the computation, check that the other machine carried it out correctly. This problem is motivated by the rise of cloud computing and other third-party computing models, which seek to use third-party computing resources, but require validation. In this work, Victor authored a paper at the IEEE Security and Privacy conference (which is the top security conference), a paper at Usenix Security conference, and a paper at the Eurosys conference. Victor’s research under Professor Stone contributed to the UT Austin Villa robot soccer team that finished in first place at the 2011 International RoboCup 3D. This contribution led to his being an author of a paper at AAMAS, a top conference in the field of artificial intelligence, as well as a submission under review at AAAI, another top conference. As is common in many fields in computer science, conferences rather than journals are the competitive publication venues, with typical acceptance rates of 10-15%. To have such a record as an undergraduate is exceptional.
Victor also served as a teaching assistant for courses in the Department of Computer Science, first for undergraduate courses, and later for graduate courses, where he earned the respect of his students. Victor supported students in labs based on MIT’s JOS curriculum, in which students build the key components of a real operating system. Victor dove deep in to students’ non-working code, understood the misconceptions, and gave indirect advice to cause the student to realize the error and arrive independently at a solution.
Victor was a member of the department’s Turing Scholars Honors Program, and was invited to join the competitive joint BS/MS degree program. This spring, we also learned that he is the winner of the highly prestigious George H. Mitchell Undergraduate Award for Academic Excellence, which recognizes seven undergraduates from across UT who have demonstrated superior scholarly or creative achievement; Victor was a co-winner of the top prize. After graduation, Victor will work full time at the Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, NM. His summer reading selections include The Complete Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and several books by Dan Simmons, including Hyperion, The Fall of Hyperion, Endymion, and The Rise of Endymion.
