Smart Manufacturing & Industry 4.0 at the Research in Intelligent and Computing in Engineering conference RICE2020 (3-4 June 2020)

Smart Manufacturing which is the key foundation of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0) has gained increasing attention worldwide. The core state of the art technologies behind Smart Manufacturing include Internet of Thing (IoT), Artificial Intelligent (AI), Big Data Analytics, Cloud Computing, Digital Twin, Cyber-Physical Systems, Collaborative Robots, Additive Manufacturing – 3D Printing.

The #NewtonFund project between Le Quy Don Technical University (Vietnam) and University of Greenwich (United Kindgom) on Smart Manufacturing & Industry 4.0 has chaired the first session at the Research in Intelligent and Computing in Engineering (RICE2020) conference.

The RICE2020 conference has been adapted to deliver online in response to Covid-19 pandemic gathering relevant high profiled professors and researchers.

With the blessings of the almighty and well wishers, two days of RICE2020 were successfully organised with research oriented discussions at 7 conference sections, and more than 75 technical papers were presented online via Microsoft Teams, with 14 experts as the session chairs participated from Viet Nam, India, Japan, France, and United Kingdom.

The section of Smart Manufacturing & Industry 4.0 at RICE2020 covers the research and technology development (R&D) topics in Smart Manufacturing & Industry 4.0, especially innovative and cost-effective solutions for the connected factories of the future and collaborative robots (Cobots), as well as the emerging R&D topics related to applications of AI, Big Data, Blockchain and IoT, with the focus on applications in Design, Manufacturing and Healthcare. This special section is supported by:

(1) Newton Fund (www.newtonfund.ac.uk), under the project entitled “Network of Excellence and Hi-Tech Hub for Vietnam’s Industry 4.0 via the UK-VN collaborations in Smart Manufacturing”, and

(2) VINIF, Vingroup Innovation Foundation (www.vinif.org), under two projects entitled “Big data analytics-based optimization of process parameters for a smart manufacturing shop floor consisting of CNC machines and Robots”, and “Innovative and cost-effective development of collaborative robots (cobots) and smart eco-systems for Industry 4.0”.

The organising committee and session chairs of RICE2020 participated in both the OFFLINE and ONLINE mode to support the authors' oral presentations. There was also the successful Inaugural Ceremony with an inaugural speech by the leaders of Thu Dau Mot University (TDMU), the RICE team members, with keynotes delivered by Prof Pattnaik (Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), India), Prof Manuel Cardona (Universidad Don Bosco, El Salvador), and Prof Tien Tuan Dao (Sorbonne University, France).

The coordinators of the #NewtonFund and #VINIF projects, Le Quy Don Technical University (Vietnam), the University of Greenwich (United Kindgom) and #Robot3T will also be the member of organising committee for RICE2021 to be organised in summer 2021.
