#SecurityScorecard raises $20 million to scale its #CyberSecurity risk-monitoring platform
SecurityScorecard, a cybersecurity rating and risk-monitoring platform, has raised $20 million in a round led by Google investment fund GV, with participation from Two Sigma Ventures and existing investors Sequoia Capital, Evolution Equity Partners, and Boldstart Ventures.
Founded out of New York in 2013, SecurityScorecard specializes in helping organizations monitor and manage key security risks around their cloud-based systems. It identifies vulnerabilities from a hacker’s perspective on the outside, and even looks at the third-party vendors a company is doing business with.
“Search engines crawl and index web pages across the internet,” said Dr. Aleksandr Yampolskiy, CEO of SecurityScorecard. “In a similar fashion, SecurityScorecard continuously surveys, analyzes, and indexes vulnerabilities across the entire internet to determine the security posture for every organization worldwide.”
Cybersecurity is one of the biggest emerging subjects of investment in recent times. Major tech companies are investing heavily in the field, while other tech titans are addressing an anticipated shortage in cybersecurity personnel — estimates suggest that the industry will be short by around 1.5 million people by 2020. Just last week, Cisco announced a new $10 million scholarship program to “increase the pool of available talent with critical cybersecurity proficiency.” And last month, Facebook open-sourced its Capture the Flag competition platform to teach developers about cybersecurity.
Artificial intelligence is also beginning to infiltrate the cybersecurity realm — earlier this month, Cylance raised $100 million for a system that helps businesses protect themselves from advanced security threats by scanning networks for weaknesses and shutting them down if any are detected.
As part of this latest funding round, Karim Faris, a general partner at GV, will join SecurityScorecard’s board of directors, alongside Tom Mendoza, who will represent Sequoia Capital.
“We see SecurityScorecard as a transformational solution that addresses the cybersecurity pandemic,” added Faris. “Organizations need a solution that provides continuous, reliable, and actionable security intelligence, and SecurityScorecard will lead this paradigm shift.”
SecurityScorecard had raised around $15 million before this latest Series B round, meaning it has now raised in the region of $35 million in total. The funding will be used to help SecurityScorecard scale its cybersecurity platform.

OLD RAG VIEW OVERLOOK, SKYLINE DRIVE, MILE 46.5 - Shenandoah National Park, Virginia. Elevation 3,585 feet
A large mass of low lying clouds (dense fog) lying across the Virginia Piedmont at sunrise this morning. The Shenandoah Valley had some blankets of fog here and there but nothing compared to what the Piedmont had. To give you a sense of scale, there are mountains underneath that massive blanket of fog.
Although I only see this phenomena a few times a year, I never tire of it. It is so surreal, spectacular and amazing to see firsthand. This is the first time I've captured one with a decent sunrise on the horizon. Usually the sky is clear when this happens and the sun produces glaring white conditions.
Note: Old Rag Mountain is actually off to the left and out of the photo, I couldn't use it in the frame as the sunrise was too far to the right of it at this time of year.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The meteorological definition of fog is a cloud (stratus) which has its cloud base on or close to ground.
More specifically, the term stratus is used to describe flat, hazy, featureless clouds of low altitude varying in color from dark gray to nearly white. These clouds are essentially above ground fog formed either through the lifting of morning fog or when cold air moves at low altitudes over a region.
To a large extent, the mountain causes fog. Moving air masses must rise to get over the mountain. As the air rises, it expands and cools; if the air is moist, cooling may cause moisture to precipitate as tiny droplets, and produce the clouds that we call fog.
Half a dozen times a year, an atmospheric inversion may produce a strange effect: fog lies like a soft white blanket on the Shenandoah Valley and the Piedmont, while the mountaintop is clear. Then you can look down on a "fog ocean," with the lower peaks rising above it like islands.

Inmaculada Concepcion / Immaculate Conception
18th Century
Wood
Height: 40 cm or 16 in.
Wood with traces of gesso
Provenance: Collection of Jose and Carolyn Savellano
Purchased in New Orleans
A small but magnificent image of the Virgin Mary in the avocation of the Immaculate Conception. The Virgin wears a loose fitting tunic that falls to her feet in gentle overlapping folds. Over her tunic, the Virgin wears a mantle that is draped loosely in the back; crosses the front from the right and is tucked under her arm. The eponymous tuck or suk-suk usually found in the back of similar type Virgins is missing.
The Virgin's face is beautifully rendered. The hair is carved in the archaic manner of individual strands. Her arms are folded and held somewhat to the left. Her expression serene.
She stands on cumulo-nimbus clouds resting on the back of a winged demon. The demon exhibits the facial features of a bear (?) with clawed feet. Maybe a dragon? In the back of the image, one can see thescaled and ridged tail of the beast winding around the cloud base. The whole stands on an integral, plinth base.

Here's a radiometer on the roof of a National Weather Service installation in Denver, Colorado. I work for Radiometrics Corporation and this is our flagship product, the MP-3000A.
The MP-3000A does temperature and water vapor profiling from ground level up to about 10 kilometers. The profiles are determines from (1) climatological data, surface meteorological measurements an (3) the received RF energy in up to 35 channels distributed over the V-band and K-band. The device also measures the altitude of the cloud base, if there are clouds. It then uses models to estimate the cloud thickness.
The devices are finding applications in the air quality industry, wind energy industry, weather modification (cloud seeding) industry, and in weather "now casting" -- about a 3 to 6 hour prediction.
