CSX M893 pops out of the Sykes Mill Tunnel after a brief pause at Delano for MOW to clear. Leading the southbound mixed freight is a freshly rebuiit SD70MAC. Another MAC is third out in the consist. Spring is just beginning to show in Appalachia, as evidenced by the buds surrounding the tunnel portal.

With a “new” YN3 painted SD70MAC rebuild leading, Q694-30 crosses Pool Point bridge this morning just South of Elkhorn City, KY on the former Clinchfield.
CSX Transportation’s Santa Train climbs the 1% grade toward Sandy Ridge with the Clinchfield hardware at N.E. Trammel still soldiering on. This would’ve been the 80th running if we hadn’t lost it for a few years.
Its’s a blessing to see this tradition make a comeback for the communities of Appalachia, and for bringing my friends and I together for another year. It was great to see everyone as always!

A title with more than one meaning. The history of the Clinchfield makes it the most "modern" route in American Railroading. The C&O between Russell and Elkhorn City, KY already existed, and at the turn of the Century entities laid out plans to make a hyper efficient route to the Southeast. No such route existed.
The story of the Pikeville cut also continues with the theme of straight shootin'. I believe the Chessie along with the Commonwealth of Kentucky planned to bypass downtown Pikeville in the 70s. The subsequent route is pictured here with US 23 and the Levisa Fork also jammed in there. M693 is moments away from yarding at Shelby. A new crew will come on board later during the night. A soppy one at that...
After having issues with their second engine, which resulted in the C875 McClure job pushing them to Dante, Q693-06 passss the signal at South End Allen this morning, after a snowstorm dumped several inches of snow on the North end of the Clinchfield yesterday.
McClure Turn C875-19 disturbs the tranquility of the Breaks Interstate Park as Mr. Elswick and his pair of YN2 CW44ACs hold back 100 loads of metalurgical coal from Alpha Met Resources’ McClure No. 1 facility, seen here crossing Clinchfield’s Pool Point Bridge. It was good to see a busy morning again on the north end, as this crew met a G691, Q693, Q694, and G811 at McClure Jct.
On the day after Christmas 1972, Clinchfield SD40 #3004 is getting a southbound freight rolling up the 1/2% grade into Marion Tunnel at the SE of Marion siding after meeting a northbound empty coal train.
Full disclosure, I never liked showing this slide because after the meet, the engineer didn't turn on the headlight until going past me and it just didn't look right. So now they're on and ready to roll.
Blue skies and pleasant temperatures greet CSX's Business Train as it rolls south on the Clinchfield Railroad, passing the picturesque barn scene at Dungannon, Virginia. This day's trip began in Russell, Kentucky and will finish at the south end of the Clinchfield in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
BNSF GP39-2s 2715 and 2952 use the connection to 28th Street Yard and curve off the Coal Runner on the evening of April 18, 2022. This BNSF 218 Job has 25 cars of stone from C. Reiss in Duluth. The limestone is destined for the sugar beet processors of the Red River Valley and uses an interesting variety of ex-NP, BNSF, UP, and Clinchfield hoppers lettered WPDX.
It was another typical cloudy, April evening around Duluth/Superior until there was a little bit of clearing right above the city of Superior. I got lucky as the clearing held long enough to find a couple of trains around town.
Another bucket list item got checked off on the morning of day number 3 of west virginia she-naynays.
B651 finally has a crew out of Shelbania, KY and is easing towards Elkhorn City. There is a loaded McClure shifter that the dispatcher felt like rolling the dice with and did not want to whip into the siding at Towers. Pretty much the only modern EMD that has looks worth a damn leads this loaded train south over the end of the C&O and the beginning of the Clinchfield.

Also digging the attraction of the day on the Big Sandy. One of CP's rebuilt EMDs lead a unit "B" train south down the C&O and eventually the Clinchfield ahead at Elkhorn City.
A fresh crew has hopped on within the past hour at Shelby, KY and they'll take em up and over the mountains of southeast Kentucky and far western Virginia on the journey towards Kingsport and Erwin.
With only about 30 people set up trackside at the 63 signals in Fort Blackmore, the Clinchfield Santa Train clips along heading for their next stop just a few miles up.
The former Clinchfield SD40 on point still looks as good as ever at age 51, as it and another EMD bring CSX L423-19 across Main Street in downtown Tipp City, OH on a picture perfect afternoon.
Clinchfield’s 1.0% Sandy Ridge grade has time freight Q653-06 down to walking speed as they grind through N.E. Trammel under dreary conditions. The 3,691 ft siding here has since been removed.

A pair of SD70MACs span Orsborne's Curve, a classic Clinchfield location, in Dungannon, Virginia bringing potash train K819 for Florida south toward Kingsport.
A late January day to be remembered witnessed CSX's newly painted office car train leaving Russell Kentucky for a long trip down the Big Sandy and former Clinchfield. Aroud midday the clouds cleared in time for shots like this at Clinchco exiting Skies Mill Tunnel.
A clean KCS Belle brings CSX B651 through Ridge Tunnel on CSX’s Blue Ridge Subdivision. The southbound is approaching the top of the old Clinchfield Loops in Altapass, NC. The red and yellow scheme paired with the green foliage surrounding the portal made for a nice frame.
CSX 1 pops out of the cliffside in Haysi, Virginia with train P00123. After laying over in Russell, Kentucky for the night, the OCS would make it all the way South to Spartanburg, South Carolina before tying up for the day.
On a typical gloomy morning in coal country, southbound CRR Mine Run C875-07 banks around the old tipple at Collco with 100 mtys for Alpha Met’s McClure No. 1 Mine & Prep Plant.
Striking a pose on the Holston River Bridge is the No. 800 with Clinchfield office car No.100. The short train is seen exiting the shortest tunnel on the entire Clinchfield Railway at Tunnel 55. Thanks to BP for the idea and ETH for being gracious enough to make it happen.
May 23, 1992: Three SD40-2's and an SD45-2 emerge from the Clinchfield's Click Tunnel and start the short climb up the connection track to the Southern Railway at Frisco, Tennessee. Trailing are 90 South Carolina Public Service Authority empties bound for Loyall, Kentucky.
