At the New York International Auto Show on Saturday, March 30th 1100 ET, Mighty Earth and The Sunrise Project along with local climate organizers staged an action protesting Hyundai’s use of dirty coal in its supply chain. Despite Hyundai’s claims about using "sustainable materials", the automaker has made almost no progress on phasing out the coal-based steel and aluminum used in its vehicles. The civil society groups called on the world’s third-largest automaker to completely eliminate coal power from its material supply chain, address human rights abuses in its supply chain. and stop the use of dirty, high-carbon aluminum and steel to make truly clean electric vehicles (EVs). The action comes days after the organization, along with over 50 other consumer protection, health, and environmental groups, sent an open letter to Toyota CEO Koji Sato, calling for the company to move quickly toward building fossil-free vehicles and eliminating human rights and environmental damage from its supply chains. Over 100 New Yorkers joined Environmental Organizations on Earth Day -April 22, 2025- at the steps of City Hall to rally for the NY HEAT Act, a major climate and affordability bill that would cut emissions and saving low and moderate income New Yorkers an average of $164 per month. Supported by top lawmakers —including U.S. Rep. Jerry Nadler, NYC Comptroller Brad Lander, City Councilmember Erik Bottcher, and representatives from the Office of the Public Advocate— community members and environmental leaders urged Speaker Heastie and Governor Hochul to pass the bill in this year’s state budget. On August 15, 2025 members of the Stop The Williams Pipeline Coalition, New York residents, and elected officials hand-delivered over 11,000 new public comments — marking 50,000 in total — to Governor Hochul’s Manhattan office, demanding she reject the Williams NESE pipeline that will poison waterways, drain New Yorkers’ wallets, and endanger communities. This is yet another example of a unifying moment for communities that have banded together to reject this pipeline three times over the past eight years. (Photo by Erik McGregor)
