Register Cliff State Historic Site near Guernsey, Wyoming

Wayfarers had a penchant for inscribing names and dates on prominent landmarks. Register Cliff, along the Oregon Trail, invited emigrants because broad river bottoms offered pleasing campsites and excellent pasture. The rocks at Register Cliff are hard enough that the engravings persist even to this day.

Monistrol de Montserrat is a municipality in the comarca of the Bages in Catalonia, Spain. The municipality includes the southern two-thirds of the massif of Montserrat and the famous Benedictine monastery of the same name. The town, known as Montserrat-Vila, is situated on the eastern flank of the massif above the valley of the Llobregat river: it is connected with the monastery (higher up) and with the railway station in the valley (FGC line R5) by a rack railway (Cremallera de Montserrat).

Montserrat is a mountain near Barcelona, in Catalonia, in Spain. It is the site of a Benedictine abbey, Santa Maria de Montserrat, which hosts the Virgin of Montserrat sanctuary and which is identified by some [1] with the location of the Holy Grail in Arthurian myth.

"Montserrat" literally means "jagged (serrated) mountain" in Catalan. It describes the peculiar aspect of the rock formation, which is visible from a great distance. The mountain is composed of strikingly pink conglomerate, a form of sedimentary rock, popular with climbers.

The Virgin of Montserrat is a statue of the Virgin Mary and infant Christ venerated at the Santa María de Montserrat monastery in the Montserrat mountain in Catalonia. It is one of the black Madonnas of Europe, hence its familiar Catalan name, la Moreneta ("The little dark-skinned one"). Believed by some to have been carved in Jerusalem in the early days of the church, it is a Romanesque sculpture in wood from the late 12th century.

Legend has it that the Benedictine monks could not move the statue to construct their monastery, choosing to instead build around it. The statue's sanctuary is located at the rear of the chapel, where an altar of gold surrounds the icon, and is now a site of pilgrimage.

Upon his recovery from battle wounds, Ignatius of Loyola visited the Benedictine monastery of Montserrat (March 25, 1522), where he hung his military accoutrements before the image. Then he led a period of asceticism before later founding the Society of Jesus.

On September 11, 1844, Pope Leo XIII declared the virgin of Montserrat patroness of Catalonia (Saint George is another patron saint.)

Through the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009, Congress designated the Red Cliffs National Conservation Area (NCA) in Washington County, Utah “to conserve, protect, and enhance …the ecological, scenic, wildlife, recreational, cultural, historical, natural, educational, and scientific resources” of public lands in the NCA.

The Colorado Plateau, Great Basin Desert, and Mojave Desert overlap in Washington County. In this transition zone, unusual plant and animal species have evolved, including the dwarf bearclaw-poppy and Shivwits milk-vetch, small native plants that grow nowhere else on earth. The hot, arid Mojave Desert provides habitat for diverse wildlife, such as kit fox, Gambel’s quail, and the Mojave Desert tortoise. This native tortoise is listed under the Endangered Species Act and is at risk of extinction due to habitat loss and other factors. The newly-designated Red Mountain and Cottonwood Canyon Wilderness areas are also within this NCA. Here, hikers, backpackers, and equestrians can enjoy scenic vistas, solitude, and natural quiet, just a few miles drive from local communities.

More than 130 miles of non-motorized recreation trails (hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian trail riding) are available for public use in the NCA. The Red Cliffs Recreation Area offers camping and day use areas, in a developed site where fees are collected. All motorized vehicle travel, including Off-Highway Vehicles, is limited to designated roads in the NCA. No motorized or mechanized vehicle travel is allowed in the Red Mountain and Cottonwood Canyon Wilderness areas, without special authorization from BLM.

The Cliffs of Moher are on the western coast of Ireland. It cannot be told by this photo but these cliffs are the highest in Europe, higher than the Ocean Fiords of Norway.

Sights, views, and things from our trip to Santorini, Greece, in April 2015.

I'm posting this to show the scale of these rock formations. These cliffs tower over the large tour boat at its base. They are made up of predominantly limestone. There are stone quarries near Cassis that mine and ship this stone all over the world. The stone is in great demand due to its very light color and high durability. It was used in the base of the Statue of Liberty.

Picture taken on Coach trip around the island. That is a road clinging to the side of the cliff. Luckily there are tunnels through the mountain so you dont have to use these roads, however on one occasion the coach did choose to take the scenic route.

Jun 06

After hiking all the way out here a week ago to catch a brilliant sunrise, only to find that I'd left my memory card at home, I finally caught some nice light here. There was a pretty heavy overcast, but just enough of a window for the sun to shine through for about 20 minutes at sunrise.

New camera also works for landscapes!

The Azores can display some stunning colors and beautifull light. While it is close to the equator the sunlight allways seems to be of a special quality, rendering gorgeous tones.

While this may look heavily saturated this shot is allmost SOOC, just brought up the shadows a bit and applied a slight S-curve.
