Macro close-up of the wiry bristles of a well-used wire brush, captured against a bold pink background. The twisted steel strands stand upright like a forest of metallic flames, showing both their strength and wear from countless cleaning tasks. An everyday tool transformed into an abstract study of texture, shape, and utility. (ChatGPT)
Handmade local street broom and scoop used to collect leaves and trash off the streets rests against a stone wall in Baguio, Philippines.
A close-up of a toothbrush with toothpaste bubbles clinging to its bristles, capturing the essential partnership in oral care. The vibrant blues and greens of the bristles and the delicate froth make for a visually striking and relatable pairing..

Description: As the Smithsonian's first photographer and curator of photography, Thomas Smillie used images to catalog the much of the institution's physical object collection, ranging from stuffed animals to plant fossils, decorative boxes, and beyond. The photographs themselves are now part of the Smithsonian's collection.
Creator/Photographer: Thomas Smillie
Birth Date: 1843
Death Date: 1917
Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1843, Thomas William Smillie immigrated to the United States with his family when he five years old. After studying chemistry and medicine at Georgetown University, he took a job as a photographer at the Smithsonian Institution, where he stayed for nearly fifty years until his death in 1917. Smillie's duties and accomplishments at the Smithsonian were vast: he documented important events and research trips, photographed the museum's installations and specimens, created reproductions for use as printing illustrations, performed chemical experiments for Smithsonian scientific researchers, and later acted as the head and curator of the photography lab. Smillie's documentation of each Smithsonian exhibition and installation resulted in an informal record of all of the institution's art and artifacts. In 1913 Smillie mounted an exhibition on the history of photography to showcase the remarkable advancements that had been made in the field but which he feared had already been forgotten.

Strange, huh? Whatever is she shooting this stuff for?
Still life...I needed it to illustrate another of my new stories.
Things you learn while scrubbing a toilet. (No, it's not at all what you think.)

C-Mine is a cultural and recreational centre in the Belgian city of Genk, which started as a development project of the former Winsterslag coal mine.
In 1917, the Winterslag coal mine was the first of the mines of the Kempens Bekken to go into production. On March 31, 1988, the mine closed its doors and in 1993 the mine site became protected heritage. The coal laundry, the brickyard, the workhouses and the cooling towers were demolished. The lamp and shower rooms (lampisterie), the management buildings (office building), the machine building with power plant and the collection machines (energy building), the warehouses, the horse stables and the two shaft bays have been preserved.
The buildings in neoclassical and Neo-Flemish Renaissance style date from the period 1912-1925. The two shafts date from 1916 (the oldest in Limburg) and 1963 (the last built in Limburg). In the 1990s, the city of Genk investigated some possibilities for repurposing the old mine site. In 2001, the city bought the complex from the Limburg Reconversion Company (LRM). The name C-Mine was chosen in 2005 through a competition. The C stands for "creativity".
