Launched as a pilot project at Berkeley Lab, the Cleantech to Market program is finishing its first semester as an official class at UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business.
Five students took a nanosolar invention by Wadia, who is working at the White House Office of Science and Technology while on a one-year leave from Berkeley Lab, and developed a market strategy and investment pitch around it, after conducting exhaustive market research. Their conclusion: to position the thin film solar technology for the off-grid market in rural areas of developing countries, such as India.
Similarly, a group of students worked on a thin film silicon solar invention with physicists Alex Zettl, Marvin Cohen and Steve Louie of the Materials Sciences Division and built a mock company around it, which they named Better Silicon.
Their presentations were delivered to an audience of scientists, faculty and energy industry professionals. Started as a pilot project by Berkeley Lab’s Technology Transfer Department, the Berkeley Energy and Resources Collaborative and Haas professor Catherine Wolfram, Cleantech to Market became so popular that it is now housed at the Energy Institute at Haas and was offered as a class for the first time this semester.

At the top of the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco to discuss the handouts in the Obama stimulus package, and what is in it for Cleantech. Still some questions, but important for us all to write our friends in Washington and tell them to invest in our future. Innovate, solve real problems, and create real wealth (health and happiness), not phantom wealth (hocus pocus numbers and cheap plastic widgets).

With recent reports from climate scientists around the world, the need for technologies matched with problems to help solve our environmental and energy challenges is even more pressing. Over the past two years, CMU has engaged with a small group of regional stakeholders, hosting meetings to understand and articulate the features of our burgeoning local startup landscape in specific energy and cleantech sector specialties. As an NREL IN2 Strategic Channel Partner, we are developing ideas on how to amplify Pittsburgh nationally with investors as well as how to understand how energy and cleantech companies might be different from other types of startups. Hear from a distinguished panel from around the country as they discuss key drivers, insights and perspectives on trends in the energy and cleantech space. What macrotrends do they see? What do they care about? What would they like to see? What would they recommend as areas of future focus?
