3. Cute butterfly partydress. Yet again, my girls doesn't like girly dresses too much... Not sure who made it, but I got it in one of Gina's lucky bags about a year ago. I don't think it's been out of the package.

This was a foreclosure we completed in Granite Falls, NC. We were contacted by a Realtor in Texas to quote this job. We sent the quote for free and won the job. This house had been sitting for over 5 years and took 2 1/2 days and 7 full loads to complete. This was a tough job but we got it done so that renovations could begin and then be sold.

Orbs join in cellar cleanout & strike a pose with the fam! ( this was probably 1997; the house was that of the father, grandfather & great-grandfather of those assembled; he had died the previous year & they came to assist in a major cleanout of the cellar; looks like Buppy wanted to help & brought friends along--that would have been just like him! )

The city street trees have a way of extending roots to clog sewer flow, and the city will clear and maintain root intrusion only if they have access nearby the sidewalk to a property line cleanout. When I bought the house 42 years ago they were willing to clean from the house sewer cleanout some 65 feet away, but current policy demands closer access.
Having marginally dealt with root intrusion mechanically and with chemicals for decades, I decided finally to pay the big bucks for the expensive seven foot deep hole. Little did I know then there would be an integer multiplier applied for multiple holes. Since the cast iron plus galvanized drain under my house was leaking at both ends of the house I figured the cast iron pipe to the street was likely also old enough to need replacing, and a trenchless replacement should be possible, or so I thought...
So first we started with the 5x5, seven foot deep hole down to the sewer lateral at the edge of the sidewalk. This was dug by hand aided with an electric digging tool by several workers under a shade canopy, with temperatures in the mid 90's. At the bottom was a surprise, the lateral towards my house sideyard was not proceeding in a direct path perpendicular to the sidewalk, but veering to the left. The trenchless technology wants the puller end near the sidewalk, and the pipe to be drawn in upper end, to be inline, not a curved path.
So next we dig a similar but offset hole following the left veering lateral until it turns towards the right to be inline with the present sideyard lateral. It does, but at this point we have moved two cleanout holes worth of dirt. And in so doing we uncover surprise number 2, there is a pipe we figure to be the gas pipe, crossing in contact with the sewer lateral, heading generally but not exactly towards my gas meter. This means the planned pipe bursting/new pipe insertion trenchless technique is out for safety reasons, and an expensive new trench for a new lateral is necessary.
So next we dig a 60 foot trench, shallow at the house end but deep towards the sidewalk, moving the amount of dirt equivalent to a third cleanout hole. Mind you, this is during a record one week Bay Area heat wave, with digging proceeding under two shade canopies. My driveway looks like a mountain of dirt. There is some good news and some bad news. The good news is that we do not find any endangered species, nor do we find any historical artifacts to bring in archaeologists. The bad news is we find surprise number 3, another pipe crossing the trench making a beeline towards my neighbor's gas meter. Perhaps the house tract developer was sharing gas laterals between adjacent homes.
So next we have to further deepen the lateral trench to route the sewer lateral under the mystery pipe. By the time we have the sewer lateral connected to the city pipes, pass inspection and cleanout in place at the surface it is eight days (and counting, backfill and compacting still in play) and the equivalent of three holes of dirt for a two man plumber sewer lateral team.
So underground, there can be complications. In retrospect, more mapping before any digging should have been done with electronic location tools to locate the lateral route, not just to locate the property line cleanout position and presume a direct route. Whether the gas routes could have been 3D mapped six feet down, unknown.

Green Scrap Cleanout
The only thing left in my green scraps are decent size usable pieces. The rest are being slab pieced like Susan K.'s bee block. Since Theresa is talking about scrap management next month I may be blaming her too. Just 42 more scrap bins to go through.
Plumber talk: The cleanout cracked many years ago and I fixed it with a hose clamp. Had to cut out a bit of the wall for that. It worked okay, but still drips on occasion, so not a permanent fix. The drain to the right of the sani-tee just goes to the sink that's right there. Everything above that in the stack is stink pipe. What that means: the only thing that will be out of commission when working on this will be the sink. The plan is to replace this whole part of the stack, including the drain to the sink. The lower 4' of wall will come out (hopefully, that's all). Don't want any problems behind a new wall.

If you have a weak stomach, look no further. I just dug these up from an old DVD and thought I should upload them for posterity. These aren't even the pictures from when I first bought the house. There were actual walls in this pit. Some of them covered with "marbled" glass tiles. This makes me look at my basement now in an entirely new light.
